For more than 25 years, Margaret "Margy" Hughes has brought, and continues to bring, an unequaled enthusiasm and energy to the Blazer athletic and physical education departments. Always willing to "lend a helping hand" or "pitch in" she is the former chair of the College of Saint Benedict physical education department.

Margy, who rarely misses a home Blazer athletic contest, has done much more than teach during her tenure at CSB. She was instrumental in the construction of Claire Lynch hall and the swimming pool. She also worked to move the athletic program into the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) in 1985.

Margy's contributions have also been apparent in the physical education department. She is responsible for introducing the Coaching Certification Program and the Life-style Fitness course for all first-year students. Margy has been a counselor, advisor and friend to many CSB students past and present.

Margy remembers a time when athletic programs were non-existent; only the Women's Recreational Activities (WRA) and intramurals were offered at CSB. "It is so rewarding to see this growth and to witness the success over the years," Margy said.

The Hibbing, Minn., native graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1962 with a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education. Then in 1972 she received a master's degree in physical education at St. Cloud State University.
Margy coached the girls tennis team at Northeastern High School in Detroit, Mich., from 1962-65. Upon her arrival at CSB, she was the WRA adviser.

She became a member of National Professional Organization for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, and is an active board member in St. Cloud Red Cross chapter.

Margy and her husband Tom reside in Sartell, Minn.
