When Webster was searching for a definition of an athlete he must have had Kelly Mahlum in mind.
“The sport that I first started playing was Little League baseball during the summer months,” said Kelly, “I was the only girl to play my first year.”
While attending the College of Saint Benedict from 1989-1993, Kelly competed in four different sports. She played basketball for four years, softball for three, and soccer and volleyball for one year each.
But it was basketball where Kelly truly excelled. She is currently fourth on the all-time scoring list with 1,612 points. During her time on the basketball court, she was a four-year starter, earned All-MIAC two of those years (1992 and 1993), two-time team MVP (1992 and 1993), and a two-time team captain (1992 and 1993). She was the CSB athlete of the year in 1993 and earned Kodak All-American honors. In her final season with the hoops team she helped lead her team to a Final Four appearance in Pella, Iowa.
Her achievements on the softball field are equally as impressive to what she accomplished on the basketball court. She was a two-year starter for the Blazers in 1992 and 1993, and was voted team captain, and earned Central All-Region and All-MIAC honors following the 1993 season.
Kelly graduated from Saint Ben’s with a bachelor of arts degree in art, and during that time was an Art Club member.
She earned her master’s degree in athletic administration at St. Cloud State University.
Kelly’s career has taken her to many different places where she has coached many different teams. She was the assistant volleyball and softball coach at CSB in 1995 and 1996. She then moved to Randolph-Macon College in Virginia where she was the assistant volleyball coach from 1996-1998, the assistant basketball coach from 1996-1999 and the head softball coach during the 1998-1999 seasons. After that, she became the head basketball coach at Greensboro College in North Carolina. Since 2000, she has been in Colorado where she is currently the head basketball coach at Colorado College.
“Every once in a while someone will ask me, if I could make my college decision over, would I make the same decision. My answer has always been, YES …” said Mahlum, “My experience there was, and still is, the best decision I have ever made.”
Kelly currently resides in Colorado Springs, Colo.
