ST. PAUL, MINN. – Senior
Fiona Smith (1,500-meters) and the 4x100-meter relay captured titles to highlight another solid performance this spring by the College of Saint Benedict outdoor track and field team, which competed at the St. Thomas University Joe Sweeney Invitational on Wednesday (May 1). Aside from two titles, the Bennies had four program top-10 marks and 18 top-eight finishes at the competition.
Senior
Fiona Smith, the reigning USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week, just missed setting a school-record by clocking a 4:25.80, which was .29 from her all-time mark. It is a mark that ranks fourth in NCAA DIII, just .40 from third. Smith is ranked top-four in three events, ranking first in DIII in the 5K and 10K.
For the third time this year, CSB's 4x100-meter relay won a title in 48.60 with a squad of
Grace Buntrock,
Tiana Johnson,
Myah Nelson and
Kate Gallagher. Gallagher also registered the sixth-best time in program history in the 100-meters at 12.39 (tied with
Tiana Johnson, 2022) in placing fifth.
Tiana Johnson was eighth in 12.64. Gallagher also placed seventh in the 200-meters at 26.36 while senior
Sidela Nyuga was eighth in 26.39.
First-year
Sabriya Farquharson was second in the long jump by going 5.49m – 18-00.25, a personal-best and a mark that is tied for third (Patti Clintsman, 2005) best in program-history.
Senior
Haley Joos was seventh in the hammer throw at 43.84m – 143-10. It was a personal-best performance and ranks sixth all-time at CSB. She was sixth in the shot put at 11.96m-39-03.00, a personal-best and sixth-best in program history.
In the 3,000 steeplechase, the Bennies had a pair of in the top-seven, including
Keiley Maahs, a senior who clocked 11;34.92. Sophomore
Mary Kenney was seventh in 11:54.87 in that same event.
Sophomore
Lauren Berg was second in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:04.82. Adelgren was seventh in 1:10.84, also in the 400-meter hurdles.
In the 100-meter hurdles, CSB placed two in the top-eight, including first-year
Anya Adelgren, who was fourth in 15.71, which was a personal best and just out of the program's top-10. First-year
Chloe Ostrem was eighth in 17.44 in the 100-meter hurdles.
The Bennies' 4x400-meter relay squad of
