Mary Morris breaks school record and earns All-MIAC honors to lead CSB Swim and Dive on final day of MIAC Championship

CSB places sixth as a team with 320 points

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – For the second time at the MIAC Championships, sophomore Mary Morris registered an All-MIAC performance in leading the College of Saint Benedict swim and dive team on another exceptional day at the conference meet, which concluded Saturday (Feb. 22) at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center at the University of Minnesota.

Morris, who earned All-MIAC honors in the 200 free on Friday, added another all-conference honor by placing second in the 200 backstroke with a school record clocking of 2:03.90, which was just .12 from first place. Morris set the school record as she bettered the mark of 2:04.49 by Ana Birklid in 2022. It was her second CSB all-time top 10 mark of the meet.

Also in the 200 backstroke, sophomore Claire Canfield was fifth in 2:07.26, which was a career-best and ranks fifth all-time at CSB.

With these top-five performances and the fourth-place finish by the 400 free relay in 3:38.16, the Bennies placed sixth with 320 team points. The 400 free relay, which earned All-MIAC honorable mention honors, included Morris, Liz Hansen, Canfield and Rachel Schlueter. In total, CSB had three All-MIAC performances at the championships.

For the second consecutive season and 12th time in program history, Gustavus Adolphus College won women's swimming & diving title of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Gustavus scored 699 points over the four-day MIAC Championship meet, edging out Macalester by 20 points (679) for the conference crown. The rest of the team standings included: St, Olaf, third, 576.5; Carleton, fourth, 497.5; St. Catherine, fifth, 396; Saint Benedict, sixth, 320; Concordia, seventh, 178; and Hamline, eighth, 159.

The Bennies had a top-eight finish in the 100 free as Schlueter clocked 53.87 in the finals after a 53.64 mark in the prelims. Schlueter's mark was a career-best and fourth all-time in school history.

Junior Megan Bartels was 12th in the 200 breaststroke in 2:31.90, a season-best and just outside the top 10 all-time at CSB.

Junior Morgan Stout had a season-best 19:28.76 for 15th in the 1650 freestyle. Also in the race was first-year Natalie Pfau who was 19th in 19:44.23, who bettered her best by over eight seasons. CSB also had a 15th place finish in the 200 butterfly from first-year Autumn Larson, who clocked 2:26.48 but had a season-best 2:24.17 in the prelims.  In that same race, sophomore Anna Boomgaarden was 17th, with a season-best 2:28.34; sophomore Josey Jackson, 18th, in season-best 2:31.97; and first-year Millie Pratt, 19th, also in a season-best 2:36.81.

On the one-meter board, senior Sabrina Buffetta placed ninth with a season-best score of 327.65. Junior Mikayla Haskamp was 12th in 323.06 and sophomore Ella Kowalczyk, 14th in 314.25. In addition, first-year divers Emma Netland was 16th in 291.35 and Abby Stevens, 18th, 271.80.

Other results from Saturday included the 200 back where first-year Maddie Stutelberg was 17th, 2:19.52; first-year Ava Nikisch, 19th, 2:23.70; and Emma Neely, 21st, 2:27.81.

Senior Liz Hansen was 22nd in 57.26 in the 100 free.

In the 200 breast, sophomore Jayda Alholm was 22nd in 2:40.72 and first-year Alivia Kortuem, 23rd, 2:44.29.
