Breanna Gates played the best game of her College of Saint Benedict basketball career Saturday afternoon, and she picked a good time to do it.
Â
Gates scored 16 points off the bench to help lead CSB to an 83-76, come-from-behind win over Bethel on the road. For her big game and productive week, Gates is this week’s CSB Athlete of the Week.
Â
In Saturday’s first half in Arden Hills, Gates helped keep CSB in the game. She hit a 3-pointer with five seconds left in the third quarter to make it a seven-point game with a score of 58-51. In the fourth quarter, Gates scored five points to help CSB outscore the Royals 32-18 to pull away with the win.
Â
Gates started the week by scoring six points and pulling down five rebounds in a 71-58 home win over Hamline Wednesday.
Â
Before this past weekend, her previous career-high was nine points this year against both St. Kate’s and Buena Vista. Gates is now averaging 5.6 points and 3.2 rebounds per game and is recorded second on the team with 24 steals.
Â
The basketball team is now 17-2 overall, the team’s best overall start since 2003-04, and 11-1 to bring them in second place in the MIAC. This has also been the team’s best MIAC start since 2010-11 for CSB. Seventeen wins marks the most for the team since 2012-13 when the team finished 20-7 overall.
Â
Gates and her teammates are back in action Wednesday, Jan. 31, when they host Concordia at 7 p.m. in Claire Lynch.
