ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – Meet days look a little bit different for the College of Saint Benedict swim and dive team this year. They look especially different for Emily Quill and the team’s divers.
Instead of traveling with the rest of the team, Quill and her fellow divers have stayed at home each weekend to compete on their own at the Palaestra Pool at SJU. And with no fans allowed to come to meets, the cheering section for the diving competitions is limited to CSB and SJU divers, as well as their opponents.
Even with the lack of fans and the altered meet day schedule, Quill is excelling in her sophomore season with the team. This past weekend against Gustavus, she swept the diving competition for the second straight week, and recorded a score that – in any other year – would have been an NCAA zone qualifying score. For her big day on the boards, Quill is this week’s CSB Athlete of the Week.
Quill started her weekend Saturday on the one-meter board, where she won the one-meter, 11-dive competition with a score of 409.85. That score is not only a season best, but it would also qualify her for the NCAA Zone meet – if the NCAA Championships hadn’t been canceled – and puts her in consideration for All-American accolades at the end of the season. She also won the three-meter, 11-dive competition with a season-best score of 393.40.
This marks the second straight week Quill has won twice on the boards for the Bennies. She also swept the diving competitions on Feb. 12 in a dual meet with Hamline.
Quill set the school’s one-meter, 11-dive and one-meter, six-dive score as a first year last season. She is also in the top 10 in program history in both three-meter competitions.85
Quill and her teammates wrap up the 2021 season Saturday and Sunday, March 6-7, with a meet hosted by St. Kate’s. Meet start time and schedule have yet to be announced.
