ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – Everything seemed to click for Maggie Beckmann Saturday afternoon.
Beckmann, a junior thrower on the College of Saint Benedict track and field team, recorded personal-best marks in both the shot put and weight throw, and moved into second in school history in the weight throw at the team’s home triangular against Augsburg and Gustavus.
For her big meet, Beckmann is this week’s CSB Athlete of the Week.
Beckmann started the meet with a personal-best mark in the shot put. After a toss of 9.93 meters last week to start the 2021 season, Beckmann improved on that by half a meter, and finished fifth with a mark of 10.47 meters. That is more than 30 centimeters better than her previous PR of 10.10 meters, set in 2019.
Her big moment came during the weight throw.
Beckmann surpassed the 14-meter mark for the first time in her career in each of her first two attempts, and her third attempt on the day of 14.68 meters was not only good for the win, but also the second-best mark in CSB indoor track and field history. Beckmann is one of just seven Bennie throwers to record a mark of 14 meters or better, and the first since Claire Baker in 2019.
Beckmann’s big mark beat the second-place finisher by nearly three meters, and is a personal-best mark by 1.3 meters. It currently ranks in the top 50 in Division III.
Beckmann and her teammates are back in action and on the road for the first – and only – time in 2021 Saturday, Feb. 20, when they head to Arden Hills for a dual meet at Bethel.
