ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The first hole of the 2020-21 MIAC Championships turned out to be an indicator of what was to come for Emily Renner.
Renner – a first year on the College of Saint Benedict golf team – birdied the par four first hole to kick off her first-ever conference meet Friday morning at Emerald Greens. That was the first of eight birdies she recorded – including three straight to end the meet Sunday to earn herself a spot on the All-MIAC team. For her impressive weekend, Renner is this week’s CSB Athlete of the Week.
After starting the day one under, Renner added another birdie on No. 11 – a par three hole – and finished her first round of the conference meet six over and in a tie for 12
th individually with a 79.
In Saturday’s second round, Renner again started the day with a birdie on the first hole, and added a second birdie on the par-five fifth hole. She took one stroke off her first-round score and finished with a 78 Saturday, and her two-round total of 157 moved her up two spots into a tie for 10
th.
Sunday’s third and final round didn’t start how Renner would have liked with a three over on No. 10, but she made it up for it on the back nine. Renner birded her fourth hole of the day, No. 14, and finished five over on the back nine. She was up seven after a pair of bogeys early in the final nine holes of the day, but she birdied each of the last three holes to finish one under on the front nine and just four over for the day.
Her score of 76 was the third lowest in Sunday’s round and left her in a tie for seventh with a three-round total of 233. That top-10 finish secures her a spot on the All-MIAC First Team when the conference awards are announced later this month.
Sunday’s 76 leaves Renner tied for the sixth-best 18-hole individual score in program history, and her final score of 233 is tied for the third-best 54-hole score in CSB golf history. As a team, the Bennies shot a 971 over the course of the three-day tournament – the third-best 54-hole team score in program history.
