ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – Annie Waters did her part last week to help keep the College of Saint Benedict soccer team’s opponents quiet.
In three-plus halves in the net, Waters didn’t give up a single goal, and had a career day in the net Sunday in a nonconference tie with Central. For her big week and impressive performances, Waters is this week’s CSB Athlete of the Week.
Waters started the week Wednesday with a first-half appearance in the net in the team’s MIAC opener against St. Kate’s. She stopped the two shots she faced to keep the Wildcats scoreless heading into the second half of a 1-0 Bennie loss.
Over the weekend she was even better. She played 65 minutes in net both Saturday and Sunday as Saint Benedict played both Saint Mary’s and Central to 0-0, double overtime ties. After stepping in the net to start the second half Saturday in Winona, Waters stopped the only shot she faced from the Cardinals to preserve the tie.
Sunday, Waters put together the best performance of her collegiate career. In another 65-minute performance, she made seven saves – including three in the first overtime – to keep the Dutch out of the net and help the Bennies hold on for a second straight double OT tie. She also had four second-half saves to push the game to overtime.
When all was said and done last week, Waters finished with 14 saves and a perfect 0.00 goals-against average. She has 14 total saves to her name in her first season with the Bennies, and is fourth in the MIAC with a 0.61 goals-against average and a .875 save percentage.
Waters and her teammates are off during the week, and return to action Saturday, Sept. 25, when they host Gustavus in a MIAC contest starting at 3:30 p.m. at the OAC.
