ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – After a shortened first season with the College of Saint Benedict soccer team, sophomore Erica Golenzer came ready to play in 2021.
Golenzer notched the first goal of her collegiate career – and her first multi-goal game – against Morris in the team’s season opener on Sept. 1 and added a third goal and the eventual game-winner against Whitewater on Sept. 5. For her productive offensive week, Golenzer is this week’s CSB Athlete of the Week.
In the team’s six-game season in Spring 2021, Golenzer put two shots on net but never scored. In the first game of her sophomore season last week she put two shots on net – and scored both times. Golenzer scored in the 26
th minute of the game to make it 6-0 and added a second goal in the 78
th minute to wrap up scoring in the 10-0 win and secure the first multi-goal game of her career.
Sunday she scored in the 26
th minute, and that turned out to be all the Bennies needed. Golenzer ran to the front of the goal and took a pass from Sydney Burns, and Golenzer was able to tap the ball past UW-Whitewater’s keeper to score the lone goal of the game.
Golenzer and senior Roxy Veldman are tied for the team lead with three goals each so far this season, and they are also two of the four players in the MIAC to have a league-high three goals so far this season. Golenzer has three shots on net so far in her sophomore season, and all three have turned into points for the Bennies.
Golenzer and her teammates are resting up this week and return to action Saturday, Sept. 11, when they head to UW-Eau Claire for a 5 p.m. matchup against the Blugolds. Eau Claire has won the last two meetings between the two teams, so the Bennies look to get back on track against their Wisconsin rival.
