ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – With one game left in the regular season, the College of Saint Benedict soccer team is guaranteed a top-two seed in the MIAC Tournament. The Bennies look to keep its destiny in their own hands and close out regular-season play with a win as they host Carleton at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 30.
Saturday is also senior day, and the final regular-season home game for
Roxy Veldman,
Makayla Firminger,
Clara Noack and
Margo Achterkirch. Fans are welcome, and masks must be worn at all times in the Sister Lois Wedl Athletic Complex.
ABOUT THE KNIGHTS
After a solid start to the year, Carleton is 0-3-1 in its last four games and looking to rebound in the final game of the regular season. The Knights head to St. Joe coming off a 2-0 loss to St. Kate's. Cate Patterson leads the team and is fourth in the MIAC with 19 points and Keya Mookencherry has a 0.94 goals-against average. The Knights – who have outshot opponents 127-51 – have been solid on the road all season and are 4-1-2 away from Northfield.
LAST MEETING
Saint Benedict beat Carleton twice in 2019 - 2-0 to end the regular season, and 3-2 in the first round of the MIAC Tournament.
Roxy Veldman had the first two goals of the game in the conference tournament to put the Bennies up 2-0 early in the second half before the Knights made a comeback.
THE STORYLINE
Saint Benedict has already secured its best finish since 2013 and, thanks to a Saint Mary's loss Friday night, is guaranteed a top-two spot in the league's postseason tournament, but the Bennies are aiming high, and vying for their first MIAC title since 2013. Carleton also has a lot to play for as the Knights look to lock up the sixth and final playoff spot with a win.
WHO TO WATCH:
Ella Young and
Alli Voss both scored Wednesday to lift the Bennies to a 2-1 road win at St. Scholastica. They scored three minutes apart, and Voss' goal proved to be the game-winner.
Roxy Veldman leads the team and is sixth in the MIAC with seven goals, and both
Paige Kahlmeyer and
Annie Waters have impressive goals-against averages this season.
