Mo Burns CSB Athlete of the Week

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – To say Mo Burns had a good day Sunday might be a bit of an understatement.

Batting No. 2 in the lineup for the College of Saint Benedict softball team Sunday, Burns racked up five hits and seven RBIs to help her team defeat the rival Wildcats 13-4 in six innings. For her big day, Burns is this week’s CSB Athlete of the Week.

Heading into Sunday’s game against St. Kate’s, Burns had eight hits and four RBIs. She more than doubled her RBI output for the season Sunday and boosted her batting average to .464 – second on the team – after finishing the day 5-for-5 with four singles and a walk-off home run. Those seven RBIs accounted for more than half of the team’s 13 runs scored.

Burns started the game with a single that was misplayed by the outfielder, so she moved on to second and Kate Deming scored. She got her second hit of the day in the third inning to advance Deming to second, but her most productive at-bats of the game were her final three. With the game tied 3-3 after a solo homer by Kendra Swanson, Burns hit a two-run single to put CSB up 5-3 in the fourth. She hit another two-run single in the fifth to make it 7-3, and ended the game early with a walk-off three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth.

Burns’ five hits in a game is currently tied for the most in Division III this season, and her seven RBIs in one game are tied for fifth in the nation. That is the most hits and RBIs for any CSB softball player in one game since the 2017 season.

Following her offensive outburst Sunday, Burns is second on the team with a .464 batting average, and is tied for the team lead with 11 RBIs. She also has 13 hits and a .786 slugging percentage.

Burns and her teammates – who are 13-4 and ranked 21st nationally – are back in action Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday this week. The team hosts Macalester Tuesday starting at 3:30 p.m., travels to St. Thomas Wednesday, hosts Gustavus Saturday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader and travels to Augsburg Sunday.
