ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – If the rest of Mikayla Von Wahlde’s career is anything like her first collegiate meet, the College of Saint Benedict swim and dive team’s record books are going to look completely different by the time she graduates.
In her first meet as a CSB swimmer, Von Wahlde set one school record, swam one other time in the top 10 in school history and finished in the top four in four of the five events she competed in. For her big night, Von Wahlde is this week’s CSB Athlete of the Week.
Von Wahlde – a first year from Freeport – and her teammates traveled to St. Paul Friday night for the Macalester Pentathlon, where she competed in five events. The highlight of the night was the 100 IM, where she set the school record in a time of 1:03.40. That time is more than a second faster than the previous record, set in 2016 by teammate Skyler Clough. That time was also good enough for a runner-up finish in the event.
Von Wahlde also had a big race in the 100 backstroke as she took third in 1:00.40 – the ninth-best time in CSB history. She also finished fourth in both the 100 breaststroke (1:14.31) and the 100 freestyle (56.21), and 16
th in the 100 fly (1:08.30).
Von Wahlde and the rest of the swim and dive team host the annual alumnae meet Sunday, Oct. 21, and are back in action Saturday, Oct. 27, when they head back to St. Paul for the MN vs WI Border Battle, hosted by St. Thomas.
