ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict Hockey Team (7-6, 5-3
MIAC) dropped a 5-1 decision to No. 1 ranked Gustavus (13-1, 8-0
MIAC), on Saturday (Jan. 14) in
MIAC play at
Ritsche Arena at the MAC.
The Bennies, which will play a home-and-home series with Hamline on Jan. 20-21, lost for the second straight night to the nation's top-ranked team. At 5-3 in the
MIAC, Saint Ben's sits in fourth place just a game and half behind 6-1-1 Hamline. CSB is now 7-6 overall. Gustavus improved to 8-0 in the conference and 12-1 overall.
First year forward
Presley Kraemer scored her second goal of the season to account for the CSB scoring against Gustavus. Junior defender
Addy Hackley had her third assist of the season on
Kraemer's goal. For the second straight night, the
Gusties used a strong first period to build momentum and take the victory. They scored three goals in the opening stanza and added two more in the second period.
Molly McHugh opened the scoring at 3:15 of the first period on an even-handed goal with Brooke Remington providing the assist. At 13:42 of the first period, Hailey Holland scored for a second straight game for a 2-0 lead. Her power play goal included assists from Remington, who would have three on the night, and Kristina Press. Gustavus, which was 3-of-10 on power play goals, added another tally at 19:28 when Kayla Vrieze scored off assists from Kaitlyn Holland and Brooke Power. In the second period, Gustavus built a 4-0 lead on an even-handed goal from Power at the 1:20 mark. Vrieze and Remington assisted on the goal.
At the 5:12 mark of the second period, CSB was able to get on the board with Kraemer's even-handed goal off Hackley's assist. Gustavus ended the scoring for the night when Kaitlyn Holland converted the Gusties' third power play goal at the 9:01 mark of the period for a 5-1 lead.
Overall, Gustavus had a 42-to-15 shots edge. It was just the third game this year when an opponent outshot the Bennies. In faceoffs, the Gusties won 42-of-62 for a 67.7 percent. CSB was 20-of-42 with
Shauna Miller winning eight and
Ava Stinnett, six.
In goal, CSB senior
Ally Frantzick, who is now 6-5-0 on the season, allowed five goals on 42 shots as she recorded 37 saves and now has 204 on the season. She faced 13 shots in the first period and 18 in the second with six in the final stanza. Gustavus goalkeeper Katie McCoy, who is now 13-1-0, had 14 saves in facing 15 shots. CSB had six shots in the first and third period and two in the second stanza.
