Bennies hold on for win over Saints

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict basketball team picked up its second season sweep in as many games Saturday afternoon as it beat St. Scholastica 64-60 in Claire Lynch Hall.

The win marked the 10th of the season for the Bennies, who are 10-5 overall and 7-5 in the MIAC. CSB also beat the Saints (0-15, 0-13) 61-49 on Nov. 20 in Duluth.

After a close start to the game, it was the Saints who took a five-point lead, 15-10, with 3:53 left in the first, but Madison Doran scored and then hit a pair of free throws in the final 30 seconds to make it a 15-14 game heading into the second. Carla Meyer scored on back-to-back layups to start the second and put the Bennies up 18-15, but the Saints hung around.

The game was tied at 21, and then 23, but Doran hit two more free throws, Kate Seyer nailed a three and Olivia Boily scored on a fastbreak layup to make it a seven-point game, 30-23, with just over a minute left in the half. St. Scholastica, however, scored twice and then hit a three in the final 10 seconds of the half to make it a one-point game, 31-30, at halftime.

The Bennies maintained the lead throughout the third quarter, but never got ahead by more than seven. Sophia Jonas scored and Doran got a steal and a layup to put her team up 42-35 with seven minutes left in the third, but the Saints wouldn't give up. They hit two free throws late in the quarter to stay within four, 49-45, heading into the final 10 minutes.

CSB started the fourth on a 12-3 run to go up 61-48 with 4:07 to play. Doran had six points as part of the run and Jonas had five, including a three to put the team up 13. The Saints kept fighting, and made it a five-point game with 1:20 left, and a three-point game with 19 seconds left, but Doran made a free throw after being fouled and Scholastica couldn't get a last-second shot up.

Doran just missed her career-high with 20 points to lead the Bennies. Meyer added 15 points and nine rebounds, Jonas had 10 points and Boily finished with nine rebounds. CSB shot 38 percent from the field, went 12-for-22 from the line and had 48 rebounds and 13 turnovers.

Miranda Broberg had 15 points and six rebounds to lead the Saints, who shot 34 percent from the field. St. Scholastica went 11-for-13 from the line and had 32 rebounds and 13 turnovers.

The Bennies are on the road for a trio of MIAC games starting Wednesday, Jan. 26, when they head to Northfield looking for the season sweep over Carleton. Game time is 7 p.m. and, per campus policy, no fans are allowed.
