NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Wednesday evening marked the third straight win for the College of Saint Benedict basketball team and the third straight season sweep.
The Bennies overcame a cold-shooting first quarter to pull away for a 63-48 win at West Gym in Northfield. The win pushed CSB's record to 11-5 overall and 8-5 in the MIAC with three weeks remaining in the regular season.
After scoring just eight points in the first quarter Wednesday, CSB scored 20 points in both the second and third quarters to take a 28-20 lead into halftime and a 48-32 lead after three quarters.
Lydia Hay started the scoring in the second quarter and sparked a 10-2 run that included threes from
Sophia Jonas and
Morgan Ebel and put the Bennies up 18-10 with 6:24 left in the half. The Knights cut that lead to one, but Jonas hit a three and a late jumper to give CSB an eight-point lead at the half.
Hay started the scoring once again in the third quarter for the Bennies, and another three from Jonas put the Bennies up 11 early in the third. A three from
Carla Meyer a short time later made it a 12-point game, and the Bennies were able to maintain a double-digit lead the remainder of the game.
Jonas finished with 13 points and five rebounds, Meyer had 12 points and
Olivia Boily had a career-high 11 rebounds to pace CSB, which ended the game shooting 33 percent from the field. CSB went 9-for-12 from the line and had 44 rebounds and just five turnovers. Hay had three blocks for CSB.
Jasmine Choi scored 24 points and pulled down eight rebounds to pace the Knights, who shot 34 percent from the field. Carleton went 9-for-13 from the line and had 44 rebounds and 17 turnovers.
The Bennies go for four straight wins – and season sweeps – Saturday when they head to Moorhead for a 1 p.m. game against Concordia.
