MOORHEAD, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict basketball team is never afraid to shoot from long range, and often uses key 3-pointers as part of runs to pull away from opponents or keep the opposing team at bay.
Saturday in Moorhead, those three-point shots just weren't falling. The Bennies hit just three 3-pointers all day and went cold from the field in the second half in a 64-46 loss to Concordia. The loss snaps the team's three-game winning streak.
Both teams struggled to get their offense going early, but CSB (11-6, 8-6) went up six, 13-7, with two minutes left in the first thanks to baskets from
Lydia Hay and
Olivia Boily. The Cobbers (8-8, 8-6) answered with an 8-0 run to go up one, 14-13, after one quarter.
Neither team led by more than three points in the second quarter, and a pair of free throws from
Carla Meyer in the final minute tied the game at 25-25 heading into halftime.
Meyer scored seven straight points to start the second half and put the Bennies up 32-30, but the Cobbers went on a late 7-0 run to go up 40-34 at the end of the third. The fourth quarter was all Concordia as the Cobbers shot 70 percent from the field to the Bennies' 28 percent, and Concordia pulled away for the win.
Meyer finished with 13 points and seven rebounds to pace CSB, which shot 32 percent from the field and went just 3-for-22 from long range. Hay added eight points and
Gabby Martin had six rebounds. Saint Benedict went 11-for-18 from the line and had 31 rebounds and 19 turnovers.
Mary Sem led all scorers with 22 points for the Cobbers, who ended the game shooting 41 percent from the field. Concordia went 12-for-19 from the line and had 31 rebounds and nine turnovers.
CSB is on the road once more Wednesday, Feb. 2, when it heads to St. Paul to take on Bethel at 7 p.m. The Bennies are back at home Saturday, Feb. 5, when they host Macalester.
