Fiona Smith wrapped up her first season with the College of Saint Benedict track and field team by earning All-American honors in the 5,000-meter run Saturday afternoon.
 
Smith added her name to the CSB record books once more in 2021 when she finished fifth in the 5K at the 2021 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Greensboro, N.C. She came into the event with the seventh-fastest time in the 19-woman field, but ran an eight-second personal best to move up two spots and finish fifth.
 
Her time of 16:45.74 betters her own school record and earned her a spot on the podium at BB&T Stadium on the North Carolina A&T campus. Smith is the first All-American for CSB track and field since 2017, and the program's first-ever All-American in the 5K.
 
Smith's NCAA debut was delayed just over two hours due to heavy rain and then lightening in the Greensboro area, but she didn't let that slow her down. Once the weather delay was lifted, Smith settled into the group and then ran the entire race as a part of the second pack of runners. Ithaca's Parley Hannan completed the 5K/10K sweep, finishing the 5K in 16:22.85. Johns Hopkins' Ella Baran took second in 16:30.93, Dickinson's Isabel Cardi was third in 16:36.74 and Smith finished just five seconds behind Hope's Anastasia Tucker, who took fourth in 16:40.66.
 
The All-American honor is the first for a Bennie distance runner, and Smith is just the second national qualifier in the 5K in program history.
 
Smith wraps up her first season with the team with five school records, she was the first athlete in CSB history to break 17 minutes in the outdoor 5K and 10 minutes in the indoor and outdoor 3K and now she adds an All-American honor to the list.
