CSB Swim and Dive records five wins, including two by Smutka, in dual loss at DII SCSU

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict swim and dive team had five first-place finishes, including two by senior Lindsay Smutka, in a 152-116 dual setback to NCAA DII St. Cloud State on Thursday (Jan. 18).

The Bennies, which will host Carleton College in a dual on Senior Day on Saturday, Jan. 20, at 1 p.m., had 23 top-three finishes, including both contested relays. Aside from five individual titles, CSB had five individuals place second.

Senior Lindsay Smutka, sophomore Rachel Schlueter, sophomore Mikayla Haskamp and first-year Claire Canfield led the CSB performance by winning individual events.

Smutka clocked 1:01.96 to win the 100 backstroke with sophomore Rachel Schlueter recording 1:03.42 for second place. Smutka also claimed the 500 freestyle as CSB placed the top-four in the event. Smutka had a clocking of 5:54.59. First-year Jayda Alholm was second in 5:59.59 followed by sophomore Morgan Stout in third at 6:03.55 and senior Megan Pattee, fourth, in 6:07.00.

Canfield had a 2:18.32 in winning the 200 backstroke with sophomore Lauren Sitzman, third, in 2:20.13 and first-year Emma Neely, fifth, in 2:39.34.

Schlueter led a 1-4 finish in the 100 butterfly for CSB. Schlueter finished in 1:04.90 followed by first-year Josey Jackson, second, 1:08.63; first-year Anna Boomgaarden, third, 1:11.72 and senior Emma Vicker, fourth, 1:18.72.

Haskamp won the 200 IM with a season-best clocking of 2:28.29. CSB had three others place in the top-four with senior Jocie Larson, second, in a season-best 2:29.81, while senior Laura Jennings was third in a season-high 2:30.52 and first-year Sydney Gustin placing fourth in her season-best 2:36.98.

Other Individual races –
Senior Emi Wagner continued her solid season in the 50 free by placing second in 25.89 while Haskamp was seventh in 26.80 and sophomore Liz Hansen, eighth, in 27.06.

In the 100 breaststroke, sophomore Megan Bartels was fourth in 1:13.22 while senior Jocie Larson was seventh at 1:15.84 and Alholm, eighth, in 1:18.96.

In the 200 butterfly, Jennings placed third in 2:28.47 while Boomgaarden was fourth in 2:35.27.

Sitzman was seventh in 2:07.19 while Haskamp placed eighth in 2:10.04 in the 200 freestyle.

In the 100 freestyle, Schlueter took second in 57.54 with Larson claiming third in 58.17 and Wagner, eighth in 58.96.

In the 200 breaststroke, Bartels was third in 2:42.61 with four Bennies placing in the top-six. Hansen was fourth in 2:49.53 while Gustin was fifth in 2:56.16 and senior Kate Mechels, sixth in 3:00.06.

Diving
On the 1-meter board, senior Claire Hippen had a 188.55 to lead three Bennies in the top-five. Sabrina Buffetta was fourth at 164.65 and first-year Ella Kowalczyk, fifth, at 164.00. On the three-meter board, Kowalczyk placed third with a score of 178.85.

In the relays
The Bennies had a pair of third place finishes in the two relays contested in the dual. A team of Smutka, Bartels, Schlueter and Wagner clocked 1:54.54 for third place while a team of Lauren Sitzman, Jayda Alholm, Joey Jackson, and Emma Neely placed seventh in 2:03.27.

In the 200-yard freestyle relay, CSB was third with Smutka, Haskamp, Larson and Wagner clocking 1:45.70. The team of Hanson, Bartels, Sitzman and Stout placed seventh in 1:48.36.
