LEXINGTON, K.y. -- The College of Saint Benedict volleyball team split on the final day of the Transy Invite to wrap up the event with a 3-1 record. The Bennies topped the University of Dubuque 3-1 in their morning match and fell 3-0 to the University of Chicago in the afternoon. CSB moves to 5-3 overall on the season. For her outstanding performance,
Emma Guest was named to the all-tournament team.
In the first set against Dubuque, the Spartans jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead with the two teams trading points until St. Ben's grabbed its first lead at 12-11. Dubuque regained the lead at 18-16, but CSB scored the next four points to go up 20-18 off two service aces by
Chaeli Haupert and an attack error by the Spartans. Dubuque rallied to tied the game at 21-21, but CSB scored the final four points of the game on two service aces by
Audrey Spolidoro and a kill from
Emma Guest sealed the first set win.Â
In the second set, CSB jumped out to a quick 7-1 lead and never looked back as the Bennies cruised to a 25-15 win. The third set was a tightly contested affair until Dubuque scored four in a row to go up 21-15. The Bennies rallied back with five in a row to pull within one at 22-21, but the Spartans were able to hang on for a 25-23 win. The fourth set was a thriller with both teams having an opportunity for set point. CSB was able to score the final three points in a row off two kills by
Emma Guest and one from
Olivia Thompson to seal a 29-27 win.
For the match, CSB recorded 58 kills and 88 digs to go along with 11 service aces and five team blocks. Individually,
Emma Guest led the Bennies tying a season-high with 20 kills while adding 20 digs for a 20-20 double-double.Â
Against the University of Chicago, the Bennies led 20-17 late in the first set, but the Maroons rallied to score five in a row to claim a 25-22 win over CSB. In the second set another late Chicago run allowed the Maroons to pull away and win 25-17. The third set followed a similar script where both teams were notched at 17 points apiece, but the Maroons again pulled away late for a 25-19 win.
Gabby Heying led CSB with a 10-kill, 13-dig double-double.
St. Ben's will return to action on Wednesday when the Bennies travel to take on the University of Minnesota Morris at 7 p.m.Â
