ST. JOSEPH, Minn. - The College of Saint Benedict soccer team was at home for the first time during this regular season with a double home game weekend starting with a match up against UW-Eau Claire.
The Bennies started off strong on offense with two quick shots on goal early by Lana Krautkramer and Ellie Wohnoutka. The Blugolds would then put the Bennies on defense, testing junior goalkeeper Paige Kahlmeyer with four shots on goal in an eight-minute span. All four shots were saved by Kahlmeyer. In the 33rd minute, the Bennies took possession and brought the ball down field, where a pass from Sydney Burns created an opportunity for Erica Golenzer to pop the ball into the air and arch it over the Blugold goalkeeper to put the Bennies up 1-0 before the end of the half.
Beginning the second half, the Bennies started goalkeeper Annie Waters, and the Blugolds once again tested her early with three shots on goal in the first seven minutes. All three shots were saved by Waters. In the 65th minute, the Eau Claire would slip one by the Bennie defensive hold to tie it up 1-1.
Nearing the last fifteen minutes of the game, Addison Stephani puts two back-to-back shots on goal, followed by a shot from Caralyn Conners for a great opportunity to pull ahead but the Blugolds hold strong.
Just as the game is getting to the end and it looks like there will be a tie game, in the final minutes Ella Young gets a free kick off a Blugold foul and she kicks it in just over the goalkeeper's head to put the Bennies in the lead 2-1 and secure the victory for their first home game.
