Hunst and Hackley record first career goals to lift Hockey to a 3-1 MIAC win over Bethel

Morris also tallied a goal in CSB's third straight win

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Sydney Hunst and Sami Hackley scored their first career goals and Kennedy Morris also had a goal to lead the College of Saint Benedict (6-4, 4-1 MIAC) to a third straight win in a 3-1 decision over Bethel (1-6, 0-5 MIAC) in MIAC play on Friday night at Ritsche Arena at the Municipal Athletic Complex.

With the victory, the Bennies are tied for second place in the MIAC with Hamline and a game behind No. 1 ranked Gustavus. St. Ben's won for the sixth time in seven games. CSB, which will travel to face Bethel in Blaine, Minn., on Saturday at 7 p.m., is now 4-2 in home matches.

First-year Head Coach Lindsay Macy was pleased with the victory, which came down to the end when Hackley put in a short-handed goal after Bethel removed its goalie to put six skaters on the ice.

"Bethel played a great game but our players found a way to win. And, good teams find ways to win," said Macy. "We are proud of the way the team grinded out a win and excited about another opportunity to play tomorrow," she said.

With a 13-6 shots edge, CSB controlled the first period and jumped ahead, 2-0. Morris gave the Bennies a 1-0 lead when she converted her second goal of the team at 4:44 on a power play goal. Abby Nelson and Corrine Brown assisted on the scoring play.

Later at 15:52, Hunst had her first career goal off assists from Chloe Lewis and Alli Voss, who both had their first assists of the season. For Voss, it was her first point at CSB.

Despite a 15-8 shots edge in the second period, Bethel pulled within, 2-1, when Ally Halverson scored her first goal of the season at 6:18 off an assist from Emily Roder.

Then, in a tense third period, the Bennies, which had an 11-to-7 shot edge, held off the Royals with solid defense. In the final minute (19:49), first-year standout Sami Hackley had her first goal of her career off Brown's second assist of the night. Hackley's shorthanded goal came after Bethel pulled its goalie to play with six skaters.

Senior Ally Frantzick was solid in goal in going all 60 minutes for CSB. She allowed one goal with 20 saves. Frantzick, who earned her 11th career win, sits 5-3 this season. She had six saves in the opening period, seven in the second third and seven in the third period. Bethel's Anna Hanson allowed two goals and made 36 saves in 59:47.

Overall, CSB had a 39-to-21 shots edge as they continued to outshoot opponents to a tune of 392-to-209 this year. CSB was 1-of-2 on power play opportunities while Bethel was 0-4. Morris led CSB with five shots while Jenna Timm had four and Ava Stinnett, Emma Rooks, Hunst and Brown all had three shots.

St. Ben's won 52.1 percent of the face-offs with 25 wins in 48 chances. At even strength, CSB won 23 face-offs and had one win in power play and shorthanded situations.
