MEQUON, WIS. – For the second straight contest, the College of Saint Benedict (0-3) dropped a heartbreaker as the Bennies lost to Concordia University Wisconsin (2-0-1), 3-2, on Friday in nonconference action on the road.
The two teams will square off again on Saturday with the puck drop at 4 pm.
In the opening period, Concordia-Wisconsin jumped on top with a pair of goals. At 2:27, Makayla Spejchr had a goal for a 1-0 lead. Then later in the period, Amanda Bauer, who was assisted by Olivia Kurtz, added to the advantage with a goal at 16:35 for a 2-0 lead.
Right after the first period break, CSB produced a big play as first-year player
Chloe Lewis had her first career goal on a power play at the 2:18 mark as the Bennies cut the lead to 2-1. Junior forward
Corrine Brown, who had five shots in the game, assisted on the CSB goal.
In the third period, both teams showed offensive surges. First, CUW took a 3-1 lead when Jillian Tabaka tallied an unassisted goal.
CSB cut the lead 3-2 when sophomore forward
Aurora Opsahl had her team-leading third goal of the season. Opsahl, who also had eight shots in the contest, scored at 18:12 on an assisted play.
For the third straight game, CSB outshot its opponent and tonight had 33 shots to 28 for CUW. Lewis had four shots and
Sami Hackley also had three shots.
CSB sophomore
Kate Moffat was in goal for the first time this year. She played 58:28 for CSB and allowed three goals on 25 shots, including eight in the opening period with nine in the second period and eight in the third.
Annalina Van Hercke of CUW allowed two goals in 60 minutes as she faced eight, 10 and 13 shots in the three periods of play.
In total, CSB had five power plays which produced 10 shots and one goal by Lewis. CUW had three power plays but also did not convert a score.
