CSB Hockey Team battles No. 6 UW-Eau Claire but falls, 4-1

ST. CLOUD, MINN. – The College of Saint Benedict Hockey Team (0-1) had a significant shot advantage but dropped a 4-1 decision to No. 6 ranked University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire (1-0) at Ritsche Arena on Friday night.

CSB, which host the Blugolds again on Saturday at 3 pm, outshot the visitors, 34-to-17. UW-Eau Claire jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening period and added single goals in the second and third periods to pick up the win. It is the eighth win in nine games in the series between the schools.

At 12:23, UW-Eau Claire's Sophie Rausch opened the scoring with a goal off assists from Keira Bolt and Rilee Winters. Just three minutes later, the Blugolds converted on a power play goal when Taylar Meier converted in the zone. Emily Hart and Sam Bandholz assisted on the goal.

CSB cut the lead to 2-1 when junior Jamie Benzie scored her fifth career goal at the 9:02 mark of the second period. On CSB's first goal of the season, Shauna Miller and Jenna Timm were credited with assists. The Blugolds extended the lead to 3-1 with a goal at 10:16 when Sophie Rausch scored off an assist from Hallie Sheridan. Then, UW-Eau Claire ended the scoring when Sheridan was credited with an empty net goal at 19:19.

Overall, CSB battled and controlled the action against the nationally ranked Blugolds for most of the second and third periods with a 29-to-9 shot advantage combined. UW-Eau Claire had an 8-5 shot advantage in the opening period before CSB had a 13-to-7 margin in the second period. In the third period, the Bennies put up 16 shots to two for the Blugolds but were unable to cut into the lead.

Both teams had solid performances in the net from their goalies. CSB's Ally Frantzick allowed three goals while recording 13 saves in 58:45. UW-Eau Claire's Stephanie Martin allowed just one goal with 33 saves, including 16 in the third period, in 60 minutes on the ice. Corrine Brown led CSB with six shots while Aurora Opsahl had five and Addy Hackley put up four shots.
