ST. JOSEPH, MINN. – With goals from senior
Cecelia Miller and
Alli Voss, the College of Saint Benedict (11-6, 7-2 MIAC, 2
nd) recorded a hard fought 2-1 win over Macalester in MIAC action on Saturday afternoon on Family Weekend.
With the victory, CSB moved to 11-6 on the season and 7-2 in the MIAC for second place. Macalester dropped to 7-4-5 and 3-3-3 in MIAC play. It was an important win for the Bennies, who were listed in the NCAA DIII regional rankings on Wednesday with the second ranking coming in the middle of next week.
On Senior Day, it was indeed a senior –
Cecelia Miller, who was able to put the Bennies on the board with a goal at 19:01 off an assist from
Alli Voss. Then, seven minutes later, Voss, who is tied for the league in goals, recorded her 11
th goal of the season as CSB took a 2-0 lead to halftime.
Macalester cut the lead in half at the 60-minute mark on an unassisted goal by Lucy Grochulska. However, CSB's defense was solid throughout the day and they held on a charge from the visitors to record the win.
CSB, which is set to host the College of St. Scholastics at 3:30 pm on Tuesday, Oct. 25 in the home season finale, had control for most of the match. However, the last 20 minutes was determined by the defense. The Bennies, which started senior Paige Kahlmayer in goal in the first half and
Annie Waters in the second half, held the Scott to seven shots on the day. Overall, CSB had a 16-to-7 edge in shots with a 7-to-2 margin on shots on goal. In addition, CSB offensive pressure resulted in a 5-to-0 edge in corner kicks.
Voss had another standout day for CSB as she had a goal on three shots with two on goal while adding an assist.
Abby Willenbring had four shots with one on goal while
Ella Young,
Grace Navara,
Caralyn Conners,
Sydney Burns and
Cecelia Miller (goal) all had one shot.
Macalester goalkeeper Jocelyn Radke allowed two goals and had four saves while facing 16 shots, including seven on goal by the Bennies.
