ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – On Saturday afternoon, the College of Saint Benedict soccer team wrapped up the 2021 season in the MIAC Championship game, capping off the team's most successful season since 2013. On Wednesday afternoon, the Bennies were rewarded for their success.
Roxy Veldman,
Chloe Miller and
Ella Young all earned All-MIAC First Team honors and
Abby Willenbring earned a spot on the All-MIAC Honorable Mention Team, the league announced Wednesday. Senior
Clara Noack was also named to the MIAC Sportsmanship Team.
Three first-team honorees is the most for Saint Benedict since the 2014 season. This is the first MIAC honor for all four athletes. St. Kate's junior Amanda Elton won MIAC Offensive Player of the Year honors, Saint Mary's junior goalie Alexis Nguyen earned Defensive Player of the Year, Augsburg's Jaelyn Nedelcoff was named Rookie of the Year and St. Kate's head coach Jesse Campos won the league's Coach of the Year award for the second time.
Veldman's first All-MIAC honor comes after leading the team offensively all season. She started her year with the first hat trick of her collegiate career on Sept. 1 against Morris, and ended the year with a team-high eight goals and 18 points. She finished her senior season fourth in the MIAC in goals and seventh in total points after also recording two assists.
Veldman, who graduates with 19 goals and 45 total points, also recorded two goals in a win over Bethel on Oct. 12, and scored the first goal of the game in the MIAC Semifinals to help the Bennies beat Saint Mary's 3-2.
Young and Miller both earned first-team nods after their stellar play at midfield helped the Bennie defense keep opponents out of the back of the net. Saint Benedict finished the year outscoring opponents 33-14, and the team put 153 shots on net to its opponents' 112. In her sophomore season, Young led the team in minutes played with 1,443. She started and played in all 18 games, and was the team's go-to for free kicks. She scored against both Gustavus and St. Scholastica, and one of her free kicks against Saint Mary's resulted in a goal to help the Bennies win 3-2 and advance to the MIAC Championship.
Miller finished fourth on the team in minutes played with 1,076 as a junior, and was a constant force in the Bennies' backfield. Her lone goal of the season came on Sept. 29 against Concordia to help the team come away with a 1-0 victory. Miller finished the season with nine shots on net.
Willenbring was another key piece of the Saint Benedict backfield in her sophomore season. She finished second on the team with 1,369 minutes played, and scored the first points of her collegiate career in her second season with the team. She recorded a goal and two assists in the team's opener against Morris, and finished the year with two goals and three assists.
Noack earned a spot on the league's sportsmanship team in her senior season after starting in 12 games and playing in 17. She scored two goals and recorded one assist, including the team's lone goal against Macalester in a 1-0 win – her first goal of the season. Noack finishes her CSB career with five goals, six assists and 16 total points.
The Bennies wrapped up the 2021 season in the MIAC Championship game with an 11-4-3 overall record – the most wins for the team since 2019, and the team's second-place conference finish is its best since the Bennies won the league title in 2013.
