MOORHEAD, Minn. – Friday night, a late goal from
Rylan Bistodeau lifted the College of Saint Benedict hockey team to a one-goal win over Concordia College. CSB tried for that same late-game magic Saturday afternoon, but came up just short.
Mollie Wise scored with just over four minutes left to play, but the Bennies came up a goal short as they fell 2-1 to Concordia to wrap up the weekend series. CSB is now 2-3 overall – with both wins coming against the Cobbers – and 1-3 in the MIAC.
Concordia (4-3, 2-2) scored all the goals it would need within a five-minute span in the first period Saturday in at the Moorhead Sports Center. Brenna Mjoness scored on the power play just over four minutes into the game, and McKenzie Oelkers scored at the 9:29 mark to put the Cobbers up 2-0.
Saint Benedict had plenty of chances – 13 to be exact – in the first period, including three shots on net within 20 seconds in the 14
th minute.
Courtney Conlin had one shot and
Lily Aamodt had the next two, but all three were saved.
Bre Hess added a shot a minute later, but that was also saved. CSB went on the power play late in the first, and
Annie Luzum and Bistodeau had shots on net, then
Maria Wallace and
Julia Pias each put a puck on net, but nothing went through. Aamodt ended the first period with a shot for CSB, but the Bennies went into the first intermission down 2-0.
After stopping 12 shots in the first period, Saint Benedict first year goalie
Ally Frantzick made 15 more in the second period to keep her team in the game. CSB had 11 shots of its own – and went on a power play midway through the second – but nothing found the back of the net.
The Bennies' defense was stingy in the final period and gave up just five shots on net. Saint Benedict had eight shots in the final period – including Wise's goal at the 15:51 mark to make it 2-1. The assist on the goal came from
Emily Lemker – the first assist of her collegiate career.
Head coach
Nick Thibault pulled Frantzick with just over a minute to play, and CSB had several shots on net – including two from Wallace – but none made it into the net.
Frantzick finished with 32 saves for CSB in her second collegiate start. The Cobbers finished with 34 shots on net to CSB's 32. Conlin finished with five shots on net, and Wallace and Wise each added four.
CSB returns to action and is back at home Tuesday, Nov. 26, when it hosts St. Olaf in a nonconference game starting at 7 p.m. at the MAC.
