ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – After playing three home games in five days to start the season, the College of Saint Benedict soccer team is on the road for the next four games. CSB starts two weekends worth of road games with a trip to Iowa this Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 10-11, for games against Luther and Wartburg.
The Schedule
CSB, which is 3-0 after the first weekend of play, starts the weekend Saturday in Austin, Minn., for a 1 p.m. game against Luther College. That game was scheduled to be in Decorah, Iowa, but due to flooding and wet conditions, Luther officials opted to move the game to a neutral site. The game will be at the Austin High School Stadium. Sunday, Saint Benedict heads to Waverly, Iowa, for a 1 p.m. contest against No. 18 Wartburg College.
About the Opponents
Saturday marks Luther's second game of the season. The Norse beat Saint Mary's 2-1, and were scheduled to host St. Olaf, but the game was cancelled due to lightning. Senior forward Ellie Bunz was named the IIAC Offensive Player of the Week after recording four shots on net and scoring the game-winning goal against the Cardinals.
No. 18 Wartburg is 1-0-1 after playing to a double-overtime, scoreless tie with Macalester then beating Carleton 2-0. Alyssa Drewelow and Alyssa Hewitt each scored a goal, and Beth Crow has played the entirety of both games in the net and has 11 saves to her name.
Who to Watch
Taylor Hedin,
Jane Koch and
Jenna Kleason have been key for CSB's offense so far this season. All three have two goals so far this season, and Hedin leads the team with six total points. First year
Cecilia Lovinger scored the first goal of her college career in the team's 3-2 win over UW-Oshkosh Monday.
Olivia Musser and Hedin both have two assists.
Heather Kaluzniak has been solid in goal with 10 saves, and first year
Kendall Koenen has also seen time in net and picked up her first collegiate win Monday.
The Storyline
CSB is undefeated after three nonconference games so far this season, and Saint Benedict looks to keep that streak alive this weekend. The team's trip to Iowa is traditionally a tough one, but CSB is prepared for an early season test after beating to tough UW schools last week in UW-Eau Claire and then Oshkosh. Plenty of new faces have stepped up for CSB early this season, and head coach
Steve Kimble looks to keep those contributions coming as the season rolls on.
