ST. JOSEPH, Minn. - The College of Saint Benedict soccer team achieved what no team has done since 2007: begin the season 5-0. The best start in the Steve Kimble era was solidified with a 10-nil shutout win against University of Minnesota Morris Sunday afternoon, Sept. 13, as the Bennies offense dominated from start to finish en route to the third straight shutout.  

 

Saint Ben's held hefty edges in shots (49-1), shots on goal (27-0) and corner kicks (7-0), while UMM finished with 17 saves in the contest. 

 

First-year Lilly DeRosier (Baxter, Min./Brainerd) and sophomore Elly Prairie (Blaine, Minn./Spring Lake Park) led the Bennies as each posted the first brace of their careers. Six other Bennies scored a goal in the game, as first-year Mia Schellenberg (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park) and senior Anna Jones (Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee) each net the first of their careers. Ten different Bennies added assists on the goals.  

 

Sophomore Claire McGrath (Stillwater, Minn./Hill-Murray) and first-year Samantha Hartnett (Saint Michael, Minn./St. Michael Albertville) combined for the shutout, as the duo brought CSB's total to 301 minutes since last giving up a goal. 

 

Sophomore Scarlett Johanson (South Saint Paul, Minn./South St. Paul Secondary) set up the first goal of the game, as she perfectly placed her corner kick pass to Schellenberg. Schellenberg ripped off the shot into the back of the net, cracking the scoreboard first in the ninth minute. The assist marked the first in Johanson's career. 

 

DeRosier quickly made it 2-nil in the 10th minute, as she maneuvered through traffic to break free for a pass from junior Sienna Chase (Tustin, Calif./Orange Lutheran). First-year Eva Gower (Plymouth, Minn./Orono) upped her streak to three consecutive games with a goal, as she buried her own rebound in the 13th minute to put CSB ahead 3-nil.  

 

In the 20th minute, sophomore Allison Cammerrer (Savage, Minn./Prior Lake) secured her first collegiate assist as she beautifully set up sophomore Tatum Janezich (Rogers, Minn./Providence Academy) for a goal. The fourth goal of the game would remain the last of the opening half, as the Bennies took a 4-nil lead into the break. 

 

Wasting little time in the second half, DeRosier left no doubt for her second goal of the game, as she used a shot from Gower to send the rebound into the back of the net in the 50th minute. Continuing the stretch of rebounded goals, senior Avery Soli (Ham Lake, Minn./Blaine) got in on the scoring, as she scored of an uncontrolled DeRosier shot to make it 6-nil in the 52nd minute.  

 

Prairie put in the next two goals for the Bennies, occurring in the 56th and 63rd minute. The sophomore's first goal came off a pass from junior Jessica Decowski (Eden Prairie, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret), the first helper of her career. Prairie secured her first collegiate brace, as she found the back of the net again in the 64th minute to make it 8-nil. 

 

Jones logged her first career goal, as she won a deflection battle and tapped it into the back of the net. Her goal came off beautiful passes from first-years Ella Verkinderen (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) and Autumn Simmons (Sartell, Minn./Sartell), both recording the first assist of their young careers.  

 

Sophomore Veronica Warren (North Oaks, Minn./Mounds View) closed out the scoring frenzy, as she floated one up and in for a goal in the 85th minute. 

 

After a perfect non-conference slate, Saint Benedict will turn its attention to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play for the remainder of the season. The Bennies will begin conference contests with a trip to Bethel University Wednesday night, Sept. 16. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Royal Stadium.
