ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict soccer team returns home for the first time in two weeks Wednesday, Sept. 21, when it hosts St. Thomas in a key MIAC matchup. The game starts at 4 p.m. on the CSB soccer field.
About the Tommies
This marks the first MIAC game of the season for St. Thomas, which heads into Wednesday's game 5-0 overall. UST hasn't given up a goal in five games so far this season. Brielle Bierman leads the team with three goals, two assists and eight points. Senior goalie Tarynn Theilig leads the MIAC in save percentage (1.00), goals against (0) and goals-against average (0.00).
Last Year
St. Thomas edged CSB 1-0 on Oct. 7 in St. Paul last season. The Tommies scored the lone goal of the game in the 33
rd minute and held on for the win. CSB outshot the Tommies 13-6, but UST had a 5-2 edge in shots on net.
Who to Watch
Senior forward
Taylor Hedin has been a big part of CSB's offense so far this season. She tallied three goals and an assist to help Saint Benedict go 2-0 this past weekend, and leads the team with five goals.
Brooke DeMets tallied her first goal of the year against Saint Mary's, and first years
Nicole Newman and
Rebecca Murphy scored the first goals of their college careers over the weekend.
Heather Kaluzniak and
Kendall Koenen teamed up to make 14 saves in the two wins.
The Storyline
CSB is off to a solid start at 5-1-1 overall and 1-0 in the MIAC so far this season, and Saint Benedict looks to keep that going as it heads farther into MIAC play. CSB is also undefeated at home so far this season, including an overtime win early in the year, and looks to protect its home field. After hosting St. Thomas Wednesday and Carleton Saturday, CSB is on the road against a tough Augsburg team next Wednesday, and looks to build momentum heading into that matchup.
