Â
Knight Moves: Carleton has been the surprise team in the MIAC after being picked to finish eighth in the conference. They are currently tied for second-place in the conference and are unbeaten in conference play (3-0-1). A surging offensive attack has been the key to their success. Their nine conference goals are ranked second-best in the conference.
Â
Last Year: In 2013 the Blazers carried an eight-game winning streak into their early October matchup with Carleton. After giving up a 10th-minute goal to the Knights, then-sophomore Peggy Renier scored off a corner from then-sophomore defender Megan Lenz in the 11th minute to tie the game at 1-1. The Blazers then received goals from Hedin and then-senior Laura Kosh to win the game 3-1.
Â
The Storyline: Both teams went undefeated through the first third of their schedules. Both however, have had relatively easy MIAC schedules thus far. Heading into the heart of the season, which team can maintain that momentum and prove their undefeated MIAC record matches their ability? Any team that is able to find the net early will likely emerge the victor. The Knights have given up one goal in the past three games, while the Blazers are riding a streak of four straight shutouts.
Â
Last Time Out:
CSB:
The Blazers won a double overtime thriller on Wednesday night against the Macalester Scots. The game was gridlocked at 0-0 through two halves and two overtimes until Hedin broke the tie with a goal from outside the box with just 14 seconds left on the clock.
Â
CC:
On a wet-n'-windy Wednesday afternoon in Northfield the Knights scored a 1-0 victory over the Wildcats of St. Catherine's University. A goal from senior forward Ellie Wilson put the team up 1-0 early in the second-half and then the defense held on to secure the win.
Â
Frenemies: Renier, Hoffman, and Carleton keeper Mikayla Coulombe were captains of the 2012 state-runner up Benilde St. Margaret's team before Coulombe became a Knight and Renier and Hoffman became Blazers. Coulombe has been named All-MIAC Honorable Mention twice, while Hoffman and Renier have each been named first-team All-MIAC once.
The separation has fared better for Renier and Hoffman than it has for Coulombe, as the Blazers have beaten the Knights both times they have faced them in the Hoffman-Renier era. In 2012, Hoffman scored the Blazers' game-winning goal against Coulombe. In 2013, Renier scored a goal on Coulombe and then assisted the game-winner as the Blazers beat the Knights 3-1. Without a doubt Coulombe has been planning vengeance against her former teammates.
