Knight Sweat: The No. 15 Saint Benedict soccer team (7-1-1, 3-1-0 MIAC) will attempt to rebound from their first loss of the season tomorrow (Oct. 5), when they will host the Carleton College Knights (5-4-1, 3-1-0 MIAC). The game is the second of a two-game home stand for the Blazers. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
Â
About the Knights: Carleton went 1-3 to open its season, but have rebounded nicely, winning their first three MIAC matchups before losing to St. Catherine on Tuesday. Their balanced offensive attack has been the best in the young MIAC season so far. In MIAC games this year they have averaged 3.0 goals per game, 0.7 ahead of second place Augsburg (2.3). Their offense is led by junior midfielder Bailey Ulbricht, who leads the team in goals (four), assists (four), and points (12).
Â
Last Year: In 2012 the Blazers traveled to Northfield and played Carleton in a match that lasted 107 scoreless minutes and two overtimes before the Blazers finally ended the match and came home with a victory. With less than three minutes to play before the match would have ended in a tie, then-first-year midfielder
Peggy Renier (Plymouth, Minn.) crossed the ball toward the six-yard box to then-first-year forward
Aly Hoffman (Chaska, Minn.) who promptly volleyed it past Carleton keeper Mikayla Coulombe to win the game for the Blazers. Coulombe, Hoffman, and Renier were the three captains of the 2012 Benilde-St. Margaret's team that finished runner-up in the state tournament.
Â
The Storyline: How will the Blazers respond to their first loss of the year? The Knights are 3-1 in the MIAC and will provide anything but an easy rebound. The Blazers however, bring one of the MIAC's most staunch defenses, ceding only 0.63 goals per game. After her first career loss, it will also be a big opportunity for first-year keeper Heather Kaluzniak (Plymouth, Minn.) to prove that she can respond to a loss and come back ready to play like a veteran.
Â
Who to Watch: The Blazers continue to be led by their treacherous trio up front of Hoffman, Grace Vaughan (Shakopee, Minn.), and
Colleen Bouchard (Cedar Rapids, Iowa). Bouchard's six assists and 14 points rank first and fifth in the conference respectively. While much of the attention has focused on the explosive offense, the Blazers have also seen their back line make some crucial plays this season to keep opposing attackers out of net. Sophomore defenders
Megan Lenz (Lino Lakes, Minn.) and
Ellie Mullen (Portland, Ore.) each made several crucial stops to keep the Blazers within one goal on Wednesday in their loss to Macalester.
Â
Last Time Out: On Wednesday the Blazers were shutout for the first time this season, dropping the game 1-0 to the Macalester Scots. With 4:10 remaining in the first half, the Blazers' fancy lightning detection machine spotted lightning, and play was postponed for 56 minutes. Five minutes after resuming play Scots midfielder Bonnie Gale took a pass from Georgia Cleopfil and scored the game-winning goal for Macalester.
