Royal Flush: The third-place College of Saint Benedict Soccer team (8-1-1, 4-1-0 MIAC) returns to action after a week-long break today (Oct. 12) when they will travel to Arden Hills, Minn. to take on the Bethel University Royals (4-7, 1-4 MIAC). The game is the first of a two-game road trip for the Blazers. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
About the Royals: After the team's first ever winning-season last year (5-4-2), the Royals were picked to finish eighth in the conference by the MIAC coaches. After opening the season 2-1, the Royals have been plagued by offensive woes, averaging one goal per game in conference matchups. They are led by junior forward Jessica Huesby who leads the team with six goals and 13 points.
Last Year: Last year the Royals came to St. Joe in mid-October for a crucial MIAC matchup against the Blazers. Both teams were tied for second-place in the MIAC standings at that point. The Blazers snagged a one-goal lead early, by way of the golden foot of then-junior
Colleen Bouchard (Cedar Rapids, Iowa). With 15 minutes to play however, the Blazers gave up two goals in one minute, and suddenly found themselves down 2-1 with little time on the clock. With time winding down the Blazers had luck on their side, getting a goal when a Blazer corner kick bounced off a Royal defender, ending the match in a 2-2 draw.
The Storyline: Can the Blazers continue their historic dominance of Bethel? Previous to last year's draw, the Blazers had won the 12 straight games against the Royals. This could also be a chance for the floodgates to open up for the Blazer offense. The Blazers are averaging an impressive 2.2 goals per game while the Royals are ceding 1.56 goals per game on average.
Who to Watch: Senior forward
Colleen Bouchard (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) continues to lead the Blazers in assists and points, with six and 14 respectively. Her six assists are the third-highest in the conference so far this year. With an assist and a goal against Carleton last Saturday, sophomore midfielder
Peggy Renier (Plymouth, Minn.) leads the team's midfielders in goals, points, and assists; and is second overall on the team with four assists this year. With another win on Saturday first-year keeper Heather Kaluzniak (Plymouth, Minn.) improved to 7-1-1 on the year. Her .887 save percentage is tops in the MIAC while her 0.74 GAA is second-lowest in the conference.
Last Time Out: On Saturday the Blazers rebounded from their first loss of the season with a resounding 3-1 victory over the Carleton Knights. After getting down 1-0 early, Renier put the Blazers on the board with a beautiful shot from the top of the box that Knight keeper Mikayla Coulombe had no chance at touching. The Blazers would later add goals from senior midfielder
Laura Kosch (Eden Prairie, Minn.) and first-year forward Taylor Hedin (Andover, Minn.) to win the game 3-1.
