With an 8-2-1 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) record, on their way to an overall record of 13-7-3, the College of Saint Benedict soccer team finished the 2011 season as the MIAC Champions, sharing the crown with Carleton. The Blazers then went on to win the MIAC Tournament, earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, and advanced all the way to the Sweet Sixteen for just the second time in school history. Their post-season efforts eventually earned them No. 22 ranking in the final national poll.
Head coach
Steve Kimble enters his fourth year for the Blazers in 2012, after earning MIAC and Regional Coach of the Year Honors in 2011. His 13 wins last season, were two better than the previous year, which included an eight-game unbeaten streak through the heart of the season, sparked by a 1-0 win over nationally ranked Carleton. The win avenged the Blazers loss to the same Knights squad a year before, ending CSB's season the 2010 MIAC Tournament semifinals.
Despite a loss in the regular season finale, the Blazers' finished as the top seed for the MIAC Playoffs. Spurred by five All-MIAC players, CSB pitched back-to-back shutouts in the conference tournament, taking the crown with a 1-0 win over third-seeded Concordia-Moorhead in the championship game. Moving on the NCAA Tournament, CSB scored wins over Carroll and Loras in the first weekend to advance to the Sweet Sixteen, eventually falling 2-1 to No. 12 Washington University of St. Louis (Mo.).
Their run in 2011 has carried high expectations in to 2012. In the recent preseason MIAC coaches poll, the Blazers were picked to finished a close second to preseason favorite Concordia. One of just two teams to receive a first place vote from the league coaches, the Blazers were also recognized nationally by the coaches, as they were the first team just outside the top-25 in the national rankings.
Colleen Bouchard leads the returners in her junior season, after claiming All-Region and MIAC Player of the Year honors in just her sophomore year. She is joined by fellow All-MIAC returnees
Megan Favorite and
Kaitlyn Lauer, but the Blazers have the tall order of replacing All-American defender
Sami Meyman. Meyman became the first CSB soccer player to become an All-American since 1998 and just the fourth ever.
Bouchard returns after scoring a team-leading 21 points (7G/7A) in 2011, but the Blazers must replace fellow 20-point scorer
Heather Beshears (7G/6A).
Jess Pellegrene and Ali O'Brien will look to share the scoring load, after scoring four and three goals respectively in 2011.
Anchoring the defense will Favorite in the nets, who started 17 matches a season ago, posting 11 wins with 10 coming by shutout. Returning to the back line in front of her will be
Heidi Hanson, who appeared in all 23 games while starting 12 in 2011, including each in the MIAC Tournament as the Blazers pitched back-to-back shutouts.
In the 2011 season, the Blazers finished with a total of 33 goals, while only allowing 22 to their opponents. The Blazers had a total of 111 saves, and allowed just three goals in their five total postseason games
Saint Benedict will open the 2012 season at home, hosting Luther College at 2:00 p.m. on Sept. 1.
