St. Scholastica Results Gustavus Results
The College of Saint Benedict Blazer volleyball team (3-4 overall, 0-0 MIAC) went 1-1 Saturday at the Augsburg Invitational. The Blazers lost their first match to St. Scholastica 1-3 before winning a hard fought match against Gustavus 3-2.
The Blazers began tournament play on Friday against the College of St. Scholastica at 2 p.m. Saint Benedict dropped the first set to the Saints 19-25 before taking control of the second set to tie the match at one a piece. The Blazers had 15 kills in the second set and a .250 kill percentage. St. Scholastica took the lead in the third set, but the Blazers fought back and tied the set 24-24 before falling to the Saints 25-27. Saint Benedict played a hard fought fourth set, but dropped the last set to the Saints 19-25.
First-year setter
Taya Kockelman (Minneota, MN, Minneota) had a double-double against the Saints. She compiled 12 kills and 29 set assists, as well as a .348 kill percentage. Sophomore setter
Kathyrn Gaydos (Savage, MN, Prior Lake) earned 14 set assists while sophomore libero
Chelsea Rachel (Maple Lake, MN, Maple Lake) had 29 digs.
Saint Benedict returned to action Friday night against conference opponent Gustavus Adolphus College. The Blazers dropped a hard fought first set 22-25 to Gustavus, but took the second set (25-19) to tie the match at 1-1. Both teams came out strong in the third set, but the Gusties took the lead (1-2) with a 25-21 win over the Blazers. Saint Benedict held Gustavus to a .075 kill percentage in the third set. Gustavus took an early lead in the fourth set but were not able to hold off the Blazer attack. Saint Benedict rallied from behind to tie the math and force extra points. The Blazers strong offense gave them a 27-25 win over Gustavus and forced a fifth set. Saint Benedict compiled 16 kills in the fourth set. CSB took an early lead in the fifth set and never looked back as they defeated their opponent 15-8 to take the match. They compiled 12 kills in the fifth set while holding Gustavus to a .053 kill percentage.
Sophomore outside hitter
Lexi Alm (Stacy, MN, Forest Lake) had a double-double with 16 kills and 21 digs. Junior middle blocker
Shannon Bassett (Eagan, MN, Eagan) compiled a .267 kill percentage and 12 kills. First-year outside hitter
Alexa Rinde (Minnetonka, MN, Orono) earned 13 kills and a .229 kill percentage. Gaydos tallied up 22 set assists for the Blazers.
Saint Benedict returns to action on Saturday, September 10th, at 9 a.m. against the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
