Soli and Stephani lead CSB Soccer to a 5-2 win over UW-Stout on Sunday

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – A fast start and a flurry of goals led the College of Saint Benedict soccer team to its second straight win, as the Bennies topped UW-Stout 5-2 in nonconference play Saturday afternoon at CSB Turf Field.

Junior Avery Soli once again led the charge for Saint Ben's, scoring twice and adding an assist as CSB improved to 3-5-0 on the season. The win capped off a strong weekend showing for the Bennies, who outscored their two opponents — Bethel and UW-Stout — by a combined score of 8-2.

It was an offensive explosion for CSB, with the five goals marking their highest single-game total since a 5-2 win over St. Scholastica on October 22, 2024. Soli's standout weekend — with back-to-back two-goal games — brings her season total to five goals and her career tally to 10. It also marks the first time she's scored twice in consecutive games.

Quick Start Sparks Bennies' Momentum
The Bennies wasted no time getting on the scoreboard. Just nine minutes into the match, junior Summer Seamans opened the scoring with an unassisted goal — the third of her career.

From there, it was the Avery Soli show. The junior forward netted her first of the game at the 16:49 mark, calmly converting a penalty kick to make it 2-0. She added another just minutes later, this time finishing a play set up by senior Addison Stephani to give CSB a 3-0 lead before halftime.

Stephani and Decowski Add to the Tally
The second half saw more contributions from CSB's experienced core and rising newcomers. Stephani, who had already assisted Soli earlier, got on the scoresheet herself in the 58th minute, slotting home a goal off an assist from — who else — Soli. It was Stephani's third goal of the year and sixth of her career.

While UW-Stout would answer with a goal from Kasey Stauner in the 72nd minute, CSB responded just two minutes later with a memorable moment: sophomore Jessica Decowski netted her first career goal to extend the lead to 5-1.

Stauner added a second goal late for UW-Stout.

Defensive Highlights
CSB's defense and goalkeeping held strong throughout much of the match. First-year Anna Mollenhauser started in goal, making two saves and keeping a clean sheet through the first half — CSB's third straight scoreless half defensively. First-year Claire McGrath took over in the second half and added four saves of her own.

Looking Ahead
With momentum building, the Bennies now turn their attention back to MIAC play. They'll resume a previously suspended match against St. Scholastica on Wednesday, September 24 at 4 p.m.
