ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – Led by
Ava Mosley,
Emma Nelson and
Sami Hackley, the College of Saint Benedict lacrosse team (3-4, 1-2 WIAC) earned its first-ever Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) victory on Saturday, defeating UW-LaCrosse (6-3, 2-1 WIAC) 12-11 in a thrilling come-from-behind win at the CSB Athletic Complex.
The game was decided in the final 3:17, with first-year
Ava Mosley and junior
Sami Hackley scoring crucial goals to secure the victory. As a result, CSB is now 3-4 on the season and 1-2 in the WIAC.
Mosley led the way with four goals and two assists, tallying six points in the game. This marked her third game with double-digit points, and she now ranks second on the team with 14 goals. Sophomore
Emma Nelson added three goals, bringing her season total to seven. Hackley contributed two goals, including the game-winner at 2:23. The goal for Hackley was her 27th career multi-goal game and it resulted in her eighth career game-winning goal, a program best. Additionally, first-year standouts
Izzy Bohlman and
Kamryn Peterson scored two goals and one goal, respectively. In the net, junior
Chloe Lewis earned the win, recording 10 saves.
The game was a back-and-forth battle, with CSB taking a 3-2 lead in the first quarter despite being outshot, 8-6. UW-LaCrosse gained a slight 4-3 edge in the second quarter, tying the game 6-6 at halftime. After the break, CSB bounced back with a 4-1 third-quarter advantage, taking a 10-7 lead into the final period. However, the Eagles rallied, scoring four consecutive goals to lead, 11-10, with 9:26 to play in the fourth quarter.
CSB responded late in the game as Mosley tied the game at 11 with 3:17 to play. and Hackley delivered the game-winning goal to seal the win and snap a three-game losing streak for the Bennies. It was also CSB's ninth home win in 13 games dating to 2023.
In the statistics, CSB outshot UW-LaCrosse, 29-26, with both teams recording 17 shots on goal. Both teams had nine ground balls, with CSB successfully completing 14-of-15 clears and UW-LaCrosse converting 14-of-16. The Eagles held a 15-12 advantage in draw controls.
Next, CSB will face Northern Michigan (7-4), an NCAA Division II program, at noon on Sunday, April 6, at the CSB Athletic Complex.
