CHICAGO, Ill. -- The College of Saint Benedict lacrosse team (1-1) suffered a 20-6 loss to No. 24 ranked University of Chicago (5-2) on Sunday, March 9.
First-year
Ava Mosley made her mark with two goals in the game, recording her first multi-goal performance at CSB. Mosley converted two goals on three shots.
The Bennies received goals from four other players: first-year
Hannah Kurowski netted her third goal of the season, while sophomore
Lizzie Schrubbe scored her first of the year and 31st of her career. First-years
Kamryn Peterson and
Izzy Bohlman also contributed with their second goals of the season.
Chicago started fast, including taking a 10-0 lead after the first quarter. Saint Benedict responded with a strong effort in the next two quarters, outscoring Chicago 5-4, bringing the score to 14-5. In the fourth quarter, CSB added one more goal to trim the lead to 14-6, but Chicago finished strong, scoring the final six goals of the game to secure the win.
The Bennies were outshot, 41-19, and forced into 26 turnovers by Chicago, while CSB's defense caused 18 turnovers. In terms of clears, Saint Benedict finished 7-of-18, while Chicago completed 17-of-23. The Bennies, which had 16 groundballs, had a slight edge in draw controls, winning 16-to-14, led by five by sophomore
Emma Nelson. Junior
Sami Hackley contributed with an assist, three shots, and a ground ball, while junior
Ella Steinke led the team with four ground balls. In her first game of the season, junior
Chloe Lewis made 10 saves in 60 minutes of play in goal.
With the loss, CSB's record falls to 1-1 on the season, while Chicago improves to 5-2. St. Ben's returns to action on Wednesday, March 12 when the Bennies host Hamline at 4:30 p.m., at the CSB Athletic Complex.
