VERONA, Wis. – The College of Saint Benedict (1-0) lacrosse team dominated Edgewood College (0-1), 17-4, in their nonconference season opener, with junior
Sami Hackley scoring five goals and sophomore
Emma Nelson adding four. This victory marked CSB's first-ever win against Edgewood.
The Bennies were in control from the start, breaking open the game with a 6-1 advantage in the second quarter to lead, 9-3, at halftime. They continued their strong play in the second half, outscoring Edgewood, 8-1, to seal the win. CSB will face the University of Chicago on March 9.
Hackley now has 95 career goals, including 23 multi-goal games and 12 consecutive games with multiple goals. She has 115 career points, 20 assists, and six game-winning goals. Nelson, with 26 career goals and 34 total points, has recorded multi-goal performances in nine games, including the last five.
First-year players made an impact as well, with
Lilly Fandel Thompson and Hannah Korkowski each scoring twice in their debut. Additionally,
Kamryn Peterson,
Merrill Delich,
Ava Mosley, and
Izzy Bohlman all scored their first career goals at CSB. Senior goalkeeper
Emma Schrepfer made her first career start, recording one save while allowing just four goals.
CSB's dominance was evident in the stats, holding a 39-8 advantage in shots. They outshot Edgewood, 13-1, in the second quarter and 18-3 in the second half. The Bennies were efficient on clears, converting 17 of 21 attempts, and they also had a 37-17 advantage in ground balls and a 13-10 edge in draw controls.
After Edgewood took an early 2-1 lead, CSB responded with eight straight goals, including two from Nelson and two from Hackley. In the third quarter, Fandel Thompson scored her two goals, while Hackley and Nelson both tallied two more in the second half to seal the win.
