CSB Golf closes spring season by competing at St. Olaf/Carleton Invite on April 27-28

NORTHFIELD, Minn. --The College of Saint Benedict golf team will close the spring season when the Bennies compete at the Carleton/St. Olaf Spring Invite at the Willingers Golf Course on Saturday and Sunday, April 27-28.  

The CSB Golf Team is scheduled to tee off at 12:43 p.m., on April 27. To follow the live scoring, click here. Last week, the Bennies won the stroke play team title at the BU Rumble at the Ridge. It was its first team title of the year and the fifth time in seven competitions to place fifth or better as a team. CSB had their third lowest round of the season at 319. For the season, CSB is averaging 327 per round.

A Look Back- MIAC Championships last fall
The College of Saint Benedict golf team finished in fifth place at the 2023 MIAC Championships. As a team, the Bennies collected a team total of 141 over par on the final scorecard (1005 – 328/341/336). This was the 33rd time Saint Benedict had finished in the top-five during the conference tournament.

CSB was led by senior Chanhassen graduate, Emily Renner. She shot a team high 26 over-par with 242 points which slotted her in eighth place. For the third time in her career, Renner finished in the top-10 individually at the MIAC Championships with a 26-over par, 242 (78-82-82), which placed her eighth. As one of the MIAC's lowest 10 individual scorers (including ties) at the tournament, Renner earned All-Championship Team honors. Each of these 10 student-athletes will automatically earn 2023-24 All-MIAC honors when postseason awards are announced in May.

Renner, who will earn her fourth straight All-MIAC honor this coming spring, carded her 14th top-10 finish in her career. She concluded the fall season with the sixth-best individual scoring average in the league at 77.1. In the final round, Renner had a 10-over par round of 82 (43-39) as she had 10 pars and a birdie on the 141-yard, par 3, 16th hole. She finished with 22 pars and six birdies across the 54-holes on the par 72, 5,703-yard Royal Golf Course.

In her first MIAC tourney, CSB sophomore Maggie Roth recorded a top-20 finish individually by placing in a tie for 16th with a 31-over par, 247 (77-88-82). Roth concluded the tourney with a round of 10-over par, 82 (43-39). In the final round, Roth had 10 pars to go with a birdie on the 137-yard, par 3, 12th hole. In total, Roth, who had a career-best 77 in the opening round, had 28 pars and three birdies. Sophomore Jamie Bimberg moved up in the overall individual rankings to a tie for 21st overall as she had an 81 in the final round and finished at 39-over par, 255 (89-85-81). Bimberg, who improved her score by four shots in each of the last two rounds, closed with a nine-over par, 81 (41-40). Bimberg, who had a birdie on the 256-yard, par 4, third hole, had nine more pars. As a result, she finished with 19 pars and two birdies during the three rounds of the tourney.

Macalester Recap - CSB wins stroke play 
With four players finishing in the top-10 individually, the College of Saint Benedict golf team captured the stroke play portion of Rumble at the Ridge by recording a 31-over par, 319.  CSB, which was led by the fourth-place individual finish of senior Emily Renner, finished at the top of the 10-team field with the third-best round of the season. Renner carded a 77 to place a team-best fourth. Sophomore Jamie Bimberg had her second straight top-10 finish by placing in a tie for 7th with an eight-over par round of 80. Sophomores Catherine Jance and Maggie Roth placed in a tie for 10th.  Jance, who had 10 pars, finished at nine-over par 81. Roth, who had seven pars and three birdies, also had a nine-over par, 81. In addition, junior Georgia Hinton tied for 37th after carding a 19-over par, 91.

Senior Emily Renner and sophomore Maggie Roth both captured wins in the match play portion of the Rumble at the Ridge held on Sunday (April 21) at the Oneka Ridge Golf Course. The match play was part of the tournament, hosted by Bethel, which included a single round stroke play competition. CSB captured the team title in the stroke play on Saturday (April 20) by carding a round of 31-over par 319 and placing four players in the top 10. After the stroke play was completed, teams were matched up by finish as CSB faced Macalester. In the match play, Macalester took a 3-2 closely-contested decision over CSB.  Renner defeated Emily Bruce of Macalester by a score of 1-Up. Roth defeated Scarlett Liu by 2 & 1. Sophomore Jame Bimberg dropped a 5 & 4 match with Bailey Lengfelder. Sophomore Catherine Jance dropped a 2 & 1 decision to  Phebe Chen. In addition, junior Georgia Hinton fell 1 & Up to Sydney Orr. In addition, two CSB players, first-year Taylar Nadler and sophomore Donelle Decker, also competed in the match play. Nadler recorded a 5 & 4 win over Ella Wright of St. Olaf. Decker lost 8 & 1 to Jasmyn Sibell of Bethel.

Individual Notes 
Senior Emily Renner, a native from Chanhassen, Minn., finished in the top-10 individually at the MIAC Championships with a 26-over par, 242 (78-82-82), which placed her eighth. As one of the MIAC's lowest 10 individual scorers (including ties) at the tournament, Renner earned All-Championship Team honors. She recorded an average round of 77.1.  She had two titles, finished top five twice and top-10 four times in the fall. This spring she has a top-five finish and this year owns a 78.2 average per round with 1,095 strokes on 14 rounds. Her low round is a 69 (school record, three-under par, Eagle Valley Golf Course, Woodbury, Minn.) as part of the 147 she carded in placing first at the St. Kate's Fall Invite. In her career, she is averaging 79.3 per round with 15 top-10 finishes.

Sophomore Maggie Roth, a sophomore from Rush City, Minn., recorded a top-20 finish and placed tied for 16th with a 31-over par 247 (77-88-82) at the MIAC Championship. On the season, she has shot an average 82.8 with 11 rounds and 911 shots. She had a low round of 77 and had one top-10 finish.

Jamie Bimberg, a sophomore from Chanhassen, Minn., finished 21st at the MIAC Championships at 39-over par 255 (89-85-81). With a season average of 82.6, she has recorded 1,156 shots in 14 rounds with a low single round total of 78. She owns a career average of 83.4.   

Catherine Jance, a sophomore from Hopkins, Minn., placed 30th with a score 45-over par, 261 (84-86-91) at the MIAC Championships. On the season, she has one top-10 finish and is averaging 83.6 per round with 1,170 shots in 14 rounds. She has a low round of 80.

Junior Georgia Hinton of Hopkins, Minn., is averaging 89.6 per round as she has had 1,254 shots in 14 rounds with a low score of 83. She placed 42nd at the MIAC Championship with a 68-over par round of 284 (95-94-95).

Taylar Nadler, a first-year from Cottage Grove, Minn., is averaging 89.0 per round with 801 shots in nine rounds and a low-round of 82. Junior Haley Strunk is averaging 89.5 per round with six rounds and 537 shots. She has a low round of 85. 

Schomer at the Helm

Daryl Schomer is in his 13th season as the College of Saint Benedict golf coach. CSB has finished in the top five in 11 of Schomer's 12 seasons, including runner-up finishes in 2017-18 and 2018-19. Schomer has coached 18 All-MIAC First Team athletes in his 12 seasons at the helm.
