CSB Swim and Dive finishes sixth at the MIAC Championships

MINNEAPOLIS – The College of Saint Benedict swim and dive team, which had three more program top-10 marks, concluded the MIAC Championships with a sixth-place finish and 376 points. The Bennies, which have finished sixth or better in every year since 2002-03, outscored their fifth-place team of a year ago that had 361 points.

On day four (Saturday, Feb. 17) CSB had six top-eight finishes with a number of career-bests. In the four days of the championship, the Bennies totaled 11 top-10 program marks and finished with a pair of All-MIAC honors. Gustavus won the team title with 649.5 points with St. Catherine, second, at 608.

In the 200-yard backstroke, CSB placed two in the top-five and three in the top-16, led by a pair of first-year standouts Mary Morris and Claire Canfield. Morris was fourth in the event by clocking 2:07.39, a mark that ranks fourth in CSB program history. Claire Canfield took fifth in 2:07.61 with the fifth-best time in program history. In addition, sophomore Lauren Sitzman was 12th in 2:12.19.

The Bennies also took sixth in the 400-freestyle relay in 3:37.29, a mark that ranks 10th all-time at CSB. The relay included Haskamp, Jocie Larson, Schlueter and Wagner.

Senior Emi Wagner, who recorded two All-MIAC honors earlier in the championships, continued her outstanding swims by placing sixth in the 100-yard freestyle with a clocking of 54.16 in the finals (54.09 in the prelims). Sophomore Rachel Schlueter was ninth in 54.51 but had a career-best 54.41 in the prelims in the same event. CSB also had a 12th place finish from sophomore Mikayla Haskamp, who had a 54.68 in the finals after going a career-best of 54.61 in the prelims. 

Saint Benedict also earned points from sophomore Megan Bartels, who had a 15th place finish with a 2:35.08 clocking in the 200-yard breaststroke.

Senior Laura Jennings led three in the top-16 of the 200-yard butterfly. Jennings was sixth with a time of 2:15.60 (2:15:43, prelims). First-year Anna Boomgaarden was 14th in a personal-best of 2:23.94 while first-year Josey Jackson finished 16th as she was clocked in 2:25.21 after going a personal-best of 2:23.52 in the prelims.

First-year Ella Kowalczyk finished eighth in the 3-meter diving with a personal-best 321.50 points, which met the B qualifying standard for the NCAA. Junior Sabrina Buffetta was 12th in 279.95 as CSB scored 16 points in the event. In the 1,650 freestyle, CSB's top finisher was Morgan Stout in 20:11.66.
