ORLANDO, Fla. –
Jane Bodensteiner and
Maria Bedford picked up wins in singles and doubles to lift the College of Saint Benedict (2-0) to a 6-3 victory over Misericordia (5-1) in the Bennies' opening match of the spring break trip.
Playing at the USTA National Courts, the Bennies moved to 2-0 on the season with two wins in doubles and four wins in singles.
Jane Bodensteiner,
Maria Bedford, and
Greta Nesbit all moved to 2-0 with wins in singles.
"It was a nice way to open the spring break. We played hard and beat a talented Misericordia squad," said CSB Head Coach Jack Bowe, whose team will face Covenant College (Ga.) at 11:30 a.m., on Tuesday, March 7 in Orlando, Fla.
In doubles, CSB captured two of the three matches, including a win by Bodensteiner/Bedford at No. 2 by an 8-3 decision over Lydia Barbour and Hailey Cridge of Misericordia. With the win, Bodensteiner and Bedord improved to 2-0 on the season. CSB also took an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles as
Brooke Tonnessen and
Greta Nesbit defeated Erin Cridge and Lauren Visalli. Tonnessen and Nesbit moved to 1-0 on the season.
Misericordia's No. 1 team of Brianna Pizzano and Emily Brecker defeated CSB's
Peyton Kopel and
Anne Bowe, 8-4.
The Bennies won 4-of-6 singles, including at No. 2 where
Greta Nesbit moved to 2-0 with a 6-1, 5-7, 1-0 (10-6) win over Emily Brecker. At No. 4 singles, junior
Jane Bodensteiner registered a 7-6 (8-6), 6-1 victory over Hailey Loughlin as she is now 2-0 on the season. Also improving to 2-0 is senior
Maria Bedford, who had a straight set 6-4, 6-1 win over Cridge. At No. 6, first-year
Brooke Beier earned a win in her first singles match of the season in a 6-0, 6-0 verdict against Lauren Visalli.
Pizzano won at No. 1 singles in a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Kopel, who dropped to 1-1 on the season. Barbour also picked up a singles victory for Misericordia at No. 3 singles in a 6-4, 6-0 decision over Bowe, who is 1-1.
