ORLANDO, Fla. – Wins in singles play from
Peyton Kopel,
Jane Bodensteiner,
Maria Bedford and
Brooke Beier helped lead the College of Saint Benedict (3-0) to a 7-2 win over Covenant College (Ga.) in the second day of the Bennies spring trip to Florida.
The Bennies captured a third straight win to move to 3-0 on the season with three wins in doubles and four decisions in singles.
"We had another solid effort across the board. Everybody played hard and converted several crucial points to help us get another win," said CSB interim head coach Jack Bowe, whose team will face Piedmont University at noon on Thursday, March 9 at the USTA National Courts in Orlando, Fla.
In doubles play against Covenant College, CSB captured all three matches, including an 8-7 win at No. 1 by
Peyton Kopel and
Anne Bowe, who edged Lauren Carr and Nicole Restrepo. Kopel and Bowe are now 1-1 on the season. Also for the Bennies,
Jane Bodensteiner and
Maria Bedford moved to 3-0 on the season with an 8-3 decision over Dani Rappuhn and Addi Gunyon at No. 2 doubles. At No. 3,
Greta Nesbit and
Brooke Tonnessen had an 8-1 win over Angela Traylor and Kacey Melton. Nesbit and Tonnessen are each 2-0 in doubles play this year and as a tandem sit, 1-0.
Kopel (2-1) won for the second time in three matches with a 5-7, 7-6 (8-6), 1-0 (10-3) win at No. 1 singles against Gillian Bosko. For the first time this year,
Greta Nesbit lost in singles, dropping a hard-fought decision to Nicole Restrepo, 7-6 (7-2), 4-6, 1-0 (9-11). At No. 3,
Anne Bowe fell to Addi Gunyon, 6-2, 6-1.
Then, at No. 4 to No. 6 singles, CSB had another successful day with each of the Bennies earning wins. At No. 4,
Jane Bodensteiner had a straight set 6-1, 6-4 win over Kacey Melton and improved to 3-0 on the season.
Maria Bedford also had a straight set win at No. 5 by defeating Alexis Baker, 6-2, 6-3. She is now 3-0 on the season. At No. 6, Brooke
Beier earned her second straight victory by winning a closely contested match, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-7) against Angela Traylor.
