SAINT PETER, Minn. - The College of Saint Benedict tennis team concluded day one of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Midwest Regional Tournament and the Gustie Invite Friday, Sept. 25. Both tournaments are hosted by Gustavus Adolphus College and feature the top players in the region. 

 

In ITA Regional action, first-year Mya Nelson (Nowthen, Minn./Elk River) made the most of her collegiate debut. Nelson secured a win over University of Wisconsin-Whitewater's Ava Andrae in singles play, securing her first collegiate victory 7-6(7), 6-0.  

 

Nelson paired up with sophomore Ellie Huber (Sioux Falls, S.D., Bishop O'Gorman) in doubles play. The duo defeated Marie Pelletier and Lily Holmberg from St. Catherine University, winning 8-1. 

 

Partaking in the Gustie Invite, senior Kate Perbix (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) claimed three wins in the Singles Draw 1 flight. Perbix defeated Ella Alcalde from UW-Whitewater, 5-4(5), 4-1 to open the day. The senior downed Luther College's Jarlyne Felix, 4-3(3), 4-2, and bested University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire's Ana Paula Ricaurte with scores of 4-2, 4-1. The wins boosted the senior into the flight championship tomorrow, Sept. 27, where she will face GAC's Annie Klemmensen.  

 

In Singles Draw 2, sophomore Kaitlyn Rahne (Hutchinson, Minn./Hutchinson) opened her season with a 4-2, 4-1 win over Cate Bright from Luther. Rahne squeaked out a win over Concordia University Wisconsin's Payton Steward. After dropping the first set, 5-3, Rahne responded with wins of 4-1 and 11-9. Rahne fell just short of an appearance in the championship match, dropping a bout with Jordan Dominick from St. Norbert College, 4-1, 4-0.  

 

Junior Allyson Yahn (Pequot Lakes, Minn./Pequot Lakes) locked in a win in the third singles draw. Yahn took down UWW's Julia Nill behind scores of 3-5, 5-1, 14-12.  

 

In Doubles Draw 1, senior Ella Marohl (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech) and Yahn claimed an 8-3 win over a pair from Hamline University. The duo will face a UW-River Falls pair in the quarterfinals of the Doubles Draw 1 bracket Saturday.

Saint Ben's will return to action tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 26, for day two of the tournaments.
