Bennie soccer shuts out Gusties 4-0 for third straight win

ST. PETER, Minn. - The College of Saint Benedict soccer team hit the road again this weekend to take on another MIAC match up, this time against the Gustavus Golden Gusties in St. Peter, and they didn't forget to bring their red-hot offense with them.

The beginning of the game was an opposite start to most of the Bennies recent games, the Gusties taking control of the attacking zone early on and getting a flurry of activity in front of the Bennie goalkeeper Annie Waters but nothing solid on net. The Bennies would try to get control of the pace finally, a shot from Caralyn Conners going wide of the net and then in the 10th minute a shot from Erica Golenzer makes it through to the Gusties goalkeeper but is scooped up for the save. In the 29th minute, the Bennies broke the scoring dam with a goal from first year Emily Cavanaugh, her first goal as a Bennie. The score would remain 1-0 in favor of CSB at the end of the first half.

The second half would see the Bennies taking control early on, getting a couple shots wide of the net. It didn't take long for the offense to ramp up, however, and in the 53rd minute Bennie goal number two of the afternoon would be scored by Lana Krautkremer with the assist from Alli Voss to put CSB ahead 2-0 over the Gusties. GAC continued to put the pressure on the Bennies but to no avail, allowing the Bennies to capitalize again in 70th minute and push their lead to 3-0 with an unassisted goal from Alli Voss. Seven minutes later, the Bennies added their fourth and final goal of the afternoon from Caralyn Conners with help from Grace Fitzgibbons. The Gusties would try to break the CSB goalkeepers' shutout near the end but a few big saves from Paige Kahlmeyer would help them hold on to the 4-0 shutout, marking the third win and third shutout in a row for the Bennies.

Up next, the Bennie soccer team travels to Saint Paul on Monday, September 26th to take on the Northwestern Eagles in a nonconference matchup, with kick off scheduled for 7 p.m.
