EAU CLAIRE, Wis. -- The College of Saint Benedict volleyball team finished their final tournament of the season in Eau Claire 2-2 after the second day, falling to UW-Stout 3-1 and topping Lakeland 3-1. For her efforts, Gabby Heying was named to the all-tournament team.
Against Stout, the Bennies jumped to a 5-1 lead early in the first set with a couple of kills from Gabby Heying. The set would then begin to be a back-and-forth battle between the two squads to gain any slight margin of a lead. Stout would end up winning the first set 28-26. In the second set, the Bennies again would blast to a 7-2 lead with double kills from Gabby Heying, Emma Guest, and a single kill from Grace Holm. The Bennies were able to keep all of Stout's chances to overtake their lead at bay and kill from Emma Guest would seal the 25-22 second set victory for CSB. Set three had the Blue Devils in with a 4-1 early lead thanks to a first serve service ace and a couple of kills. A few errors helped the Bennies capitalize and tie it 5-5 and from there the two teams traded points until Stout would take the set 25-23. Set number four would be like the last, the two teams trading points after the Bennies tie it up 4-4 on an attack error. However, Stout would go on a four-point run to win the set 25-20 and take the game 3-1 over the Bennies.
Emma Guest led the Bennies with 18 kills and only two errors. Mackenzie McDonald had 24 digs to lead the team. Audrey Spolidoro dished out 42 assists.
Against Lakeland, the Bennies would go on a streak, with the help of two kills from Heying, to take a 7-3 lead in set one. A couple other small runs helped push the Bennies to a 25-19 set victory, sealing it with a kill by Guest. The second set would be back-and-forth points between the two teams, until Lakeland got into a five-point run to lead 16-12. That run was one that the Bennies couldn't recover from, and they would fall in set two 20-25. The third set, CSB was back on track, taking a 7-1 lead early with three kills from Heying and a service ace from McDonald. A few errors from Lakeland would give the Bennies another point run later in the set to put them up 18-10. A Lakeland attack error would seal the set win for the Bennies 25-16. The fourth set would be locked in by the Bennies, who took an 11-6 lead off a kill from Olivia Thompson and never looked back, taking the final set 25-15 to win the game 3-1.
Heying led the Bennies with 19 kills and 10 digs, hitting .415 for the match. McDonald had a team high 14 digs. Spolidoro put up a total of 47 assists.
Next up, the Bennies officially begin MIAC play as they hit the road to play Hamline in St. Paul on September 21st at 7 p.m.
