Fast start propels Bennies to win over St. Olaf

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – After a slow start Monday at Hamline, the College of Saint Benedict basketball team knew it needed to jump out and take control quickly Wednesday against St. Olaf – and that's just what the Bennies did.

Sophia Jonas and Gabby Martin both hit 3-pointers and Carla Meyer hit two to put the Bennies up 12-2 early en route to a 73-60 win over the Oles Wednesday in Claire Lynch. Wednesday marked the first time St. Olaf coach Kelly Mahlum – a 1993 CSB alumnae – had coached against her old team in Claire Lynch.

After Martin hit a three she scored again on a fastbreak after a steal to put the Bennies up 12, 14-2. The Oles (7-15, 6-13) cut the gap to seven, but Mery scored and then Nancy Soro scored to put CS back up 10, 23-13, heading into the second.

St. Olaf scored at the 9:14 mark of the second quarter, and neither team scored again until Olivia Boily scored at the 5:58 mark. A pair of free throws from Soro and another layup from Boily made it a 15-point game with 3:19 remaining in the half, but a late three from the Oles cut CSB's lead to 13, 34-21, heading into the break.

Threes from Martin and Jonas made it a 17-point game midway through the third, and a jumper from Madison Doran pushed CSB's lead to 21, 53-32. The Bennies led 56-35 after three, but the Oles weren't done yet. St. Olaf went on an 11-4 run to make it a 14-point game, 60-46, with 6:23 left, and got the lead down to nine late, but CSB hit free throws down the stretch – including two from Martin in the final 20 seconds – to seal the win.

Martin finished with a career-high 17 points to pace the Bennies - who shot 42 percent from the field and hit eight 3-pointers – and she also had a career-high six assists. Meyer added 15 points, Jonas finished with 13 and Tori Szathmary just missed a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds. CSB went 13-for-22 from the line and had 36 rebounds and 15 turnovers.

Rachel Kelly led the Oles with 17 points and Sophia Kormann had 11 rebounds St. Olaf shot 35 percent from the field, went 12-for-19 from the line and had 41 rebounds and 20 turnovers.

With three games left in the regular season, CSB is 13-8 overall and 10-8 and securely in fifth in the MIAC. The Bennies are back on the road Saturday to take on Augsburg, which leads the league with a 16-2 conference mark.
