Audrey Spolidoro recorded double doubles to lead the College of Saint Benedict (14-7, 6-1
MIAC) to its fifth straight victory in a 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 26-24) sweep over Carleton College (5-14, 1-7
MIAC) on Saturday night.
With their fourth straight set victory in the last five matches, CSB improved to 14-7 on the season and with a 6-1 record sit in second place in the
MIAC, just a game out of first place. Next for St. Ben's will be a pair of home matches including against St. Olaf at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 21 and against league leader Gustavus Adolphus at 3 p.m. on Oct. 22.
The Bennies had control throughout the match, although were pushed in the third set before prevailing. CSB, which won by scores of 25-16, 25-19 and 26-24, finished with 40 kills on 129 attacks (18 errors) with a .171 hitting mark. In addition, the Bennies registered 11 aces, which tied a season-high accomplished for the third time. In addition, CSB had six total blocks.
Heying, a senior first-team
All-MIAC performer, continued her outstanding season with her 24th career double double on 13 kills with 10 digs. Heying, who ended the match with a kill, now has 52 matches with double-digit kills, including 19 this year (18 in a row). In addition, the senior has 275 kills on the season and totaled 874 in her career as she approaches 900 in her career.
Spolidoro, who leads the
MIAC in assists, registered 34 assists while adding 14 digs, two blocks and three kills. She now has 10 double doubles this year, including four in a row. She also surpassed 1,300 assists and has 1,317 including a league-best 796 this year. Also, for the Bennies,
Chaeli Haupert tied a career-high with four services aces and had 10 digs for her 14
th double-digit total this season.
Mackenzie McDonald added 20 digs. In the middle.
Paige Andries hit .238 with seven kills and four blocks while
Mackenzie Knofczynski added seven kills while hitting .333.
In the opening set, CSB hit .227 with 16 kills and just six errors while Carleton had six kills and a .000 hitting mark. The Bennies led from start to finish to record the 25-16 decision.
In the second set, the Bennies hit just .133 on nine kills, but Carleton errors hurt the home team. They had a 13-9 kills edge and hit .222 but fell 25-19. They rallied late in the set, but the margin was too large.
In the final set, CSB had 15 kills and a .145 hitting mark and were outhit by the Knights which had 17 kills and hit .259. However, CSB had an advantage on service which played a key role as they recorded five aces in the set. CSB trailed 5-2 and 10-7 before rallied. With a 10-1 run, keyed by a pair of service aces, CSB took a 17-11 lead. However, the Knights fought back and with a 7-1 run of their own cut the deficit to 19-18. Later, CSB took a 24-23 lead after an ace by Guest and a kill by Knofczynski before Heying's kill closed it out.
