DULUTH, Minn. -- The College of Saint Benedict volleyball team posted a victory over the College of St. Scholastica in straight sets on Saturday evening at Reif Gymnasium. With the win CSB moves to 10-7 overall and 2-1 in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play.
Saint Ben's had one of its best offensive efforts of the season in the first set, hitting at a .485 clip, with 17 kills on 33 attempts with just one error. The Bennies jumped out to a quick 9-4 lead, and
Gabby Heying served four in a row to break things open and give CSB a 19-10 lead. CSB scored five of the last six points to seal the 25-15 first set win.
The second set again found CSB with an early lead -- a 13-6 advantage after an
Emma Guest kill and service ace combined with a Scholastica hitting error. Saint Ben's again was solid at the end of the set, scoring three of the last four points winning the second set 25-17. Saint Ben's hit .250 in the set, while St. Scholastica hit .167.
The third set started much more evenly than the first two and found both teams notched at 11 points apiece. The Bennies used two small runs to build a 21-17 lead and scored four of the last five points to seal the third set win 25-20.
For the match, Saint Ben's hit a season-best .319. Individually,
Gabby Heying led the Bennies with a 15-kill, 12-dig double-double.
Emma Guest also finished with double digit kills, posting 13 kills with a .306 hitting percentage.
Olivia Thompson added seven kills and
Madelyn Gregory chipped in six kills for CSB.
Mackenzie McDonald had a team best 14 digs in the win.
Audrey Spolidoro posted a 39-assist, 11-dig performance and she added four kills on five attempts.
Saint Benedict returns to action with a pair of matches next weekend at Claire Lynch Hall. The Bennies host Macalester College on Friday at 7 p.m. and take on Augsburg University on Saturday at 5 p.m.
