Slavik, Birklid combine for five individual wins as CSB tops Knights

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict swim and dive team picked up a big MIAC dual win Saturday afternoon as it beat Carleton 167-125.
 
The win in Collegeville marked the Bennies' first over the Knights since Jan. 23, 2016, and just the sixth since the 1997-98 season.
 
Senior Ana Birklid and junior Madison Slavik combined for five individual wins to lead CSB – which picked up 11 wins on the day. Birklid won a trio of events in the 20 free, 100 breaststroke and 200 backstroke. She finished the 200 free in 2:00.18, the 100 breaststroke in a career-best time of 1:10.67 and the 200 backstroke in 2:12.60.
 
Slavik won the 100 backstroke in 1:02.12 and the 500 free in 5:44.45. Birklid and Slavik teamed up with Jocie Larson and Emi Wagner to win the 200 medley relay in 1:54.46, and Slavik, Larson, Lindsay Smutka and Wagner won the 400 free relay in 3:50.22.
 
Wagner picked up an individual win of her own Saturday as she took first in the 50 free in 25.93. Larson finished second in 26.05 seconds. Sophomore Hannah Tatge took first in the 100 free in 57.81 seconds with Wagner right behind in second in 57.92 seconds, and Molly Johanson picked up a win in the 400 IM in 4:52.84. Junior diver Emily Quill also picked up a win for the Bennies as she took first in the three-meter, six-dive competition with a score of 223.35. She also finished second on the one-meter board with a score of 220.60.
 
Smutka took second in the 100 backstroke in 1:02.76 and third in the 200 backstroke in 2:19.56. Fiona Rosko and Laura Jennings took second and third, respectively, in the 200 fly. Rosko finished in 2:17.97 and Jennings in 2:26.19. Jennings also finished third in the 500 free in 5:50.09.
 
Tatge finished third in the 200 free (2:08.13) and Johanson took third in the 1,650 free in 19:23.78. First year diver took third in both the one-meter diving competition (166.80) and the three-meter competition (156.50). Larson finished third in the 100 fly in 1:06.17, Rosko took third in the 400 IM in 4:57.53 and Kate Mechels finished third in the 200 breaststroke in 2:25.26.
 
The Bennies return to action Thursday, Jan. 20, when they head to St. Cloud State to take on the Huskies at 5 p.m. at the Halenback Hall Pool on the SCSU campus.
